They were convinced that even if Obama kept winning policy battles, they could win the broader messaging war simply by remaining unified and fighting him on everything.

This verbiage starts by begging the question. For a glaring counterexample, Obama didn't win the Cuba policy battle. So it didn't even make it to this "broader messaging war".

This strategy of kicking the hell out of Obama all the time, treating him not just as a president from the opposing party but an extreme threat to the American way of life, has been a remarkable political success.

With, of course, no effort expended for wondering why that strategy worked. This is just a long-winded example of Obama's lack of leadership in action.

Sounds like your facts are more alternate than mine.

It should be to you too.

After all, you just linked to a story which describes a narrative of political opposition to Obama doing something very predictable - and it works, despite Obama's advantageous political position.

Also the story supposes that Obama had the advantage in policy creation, but with the Cuban story, we see he didn't use that alleged advantage. So I see in your linked story and this Cuban story, a combination of inability to lead on policy and repeated excuses for Obama's leadership failures.

Sorry, just because mean political opponents are mean, doesn't excuse the flaws. The job of US President is hard because of stuff like this. Plenty of presidents figured out how to do it despite those obstacles. Obama just didn't meet the usual expectations.

And your rebuttal: this is somehow "alternate" and hence, can be ignored. Well, you shouldn't have proven my argument for me then, if you didn't want the "alternate" facts to prevail.

Republicans Keep Admitting Everything They Said About Obama Was a Lie [nymag.com]

Listen, I’ll be the first to admit that when the tea party wave, of which I was one, got here in 2011, the last thing we were interested in was giving President Obama legislative successes.

Mitch McConnell boasted that he pressured Republicans to refuse to compromise with any of the Obama administration’s priorities in his first two years

Republicans framed their policy as “deficit reduction,” and the debt-scold community and most of the mainstream news media took this framing at face value.

as Mulvaney now casually concedes, they didn’t want to give him any accomplishments at all, so even if Obama offered a deal they could live with, they would have opposed it rather than allow him to claim legislative success.

What a bloody stupid way to run a country.

I find it remarkable how little that story supports your present belly-aching. I've already noted that Obama is far from the first president to experience opposition. You really ought to think about why Obama's opposition was more effective than say LBJ's, Reagan's, or Clinton's opposition, to name a few.
