...but something to consider:
Slow down! You have enough articles going onto the home page that none of them are getting a lot of traction.
Maybe (for now) having a limit of 1 article every 2-4 hours, at least for a day or two, to give time for people

I suspect having the 'number of comments' field updating more frequently would also help; a large part of what drew me into a story on /. was the number of comments in it. There're several stories on the front page that have many more comments in them than the counter implies and that might be causing people to 'wait for more'.
If only I registered 3 users earlier....

There is a bug regarding the # comments displayed on main. It's been kinda intermittent
