The average American watches more than five hours of TV per day, but pretty soon that leisure time may be dominated by YouTube and other online video services.

In an address at CES 2016, YouTube's chief business officer Robert Kyncl argued that digital video will be the single biggest way that Americans spend their free time by 2020 – more than watching TV, listening to music, playing video games, or reading.

The amount of time people spend watching TV each day has been pretty steady for a few years now, Mr. Kyncl pointed out, while time spent watching online videos has grown by more than 50 percent each year. Data from media research firm Nielsen shows that it's not just young people watching online videos, either: adults aged 35 to 49 spent 80 percent more time on video sites in 2014 than in 2013, and adults aged 50 to 64 spent 60 percent more time on video sites over the same time period.

    This is pretty much the case in my household.

    My kids game and watch youtube and skype at the same time!

    So much so I had to have another phone line fitted, so I could use netflix while they are active.

    They don't recognise famous people from television, but they for sure know who pewdipie is.

    Southpark totally nailed this with their death of the living room/cartmanbra/pewdepie episodes at the end of last years season. If you have not watched it you should, they have their finger on the pulse of society better than anything else on broadcast media right now.

    OFC, I watched from a streaming site, I gave up any tunable TV devices and my TV licence about 3 years ago now.

    Now did I make the move because I was streaming more? No... I jumped because of advertising. No, not jumped. Pushed. Advertising pushed me away from TV.

    And his biggest move of all is TNT's plan to reduce the ad load on its three new drama series this year by more than half. "TV is the best advertising delivery mechanism ever invented. It's unparalleled for building brands and moving consumers, but we have overstuffed the bird" and diluted the effectiveness of ads, said Reilly.

    To that end, Reilly said the network has "just begun negotiations" to add eight to 10 minutes of additional program time per hour on the new dramas premiering this year. "This is an opportunity we're putting out to the industry to embrace change and move the needle," he said. "We're going to reduce the ad load in those hours by over 50 percent."

      Well, they had better to anyway. TNT is about 1/3rd content, 2/3rd ads. This is why I watch them (if ever) after recording the movie I was interested in.

      Not that I did it *once* in the last year, though... As the movies are always old, downloading them or looking in my recorded folder I almost every time find the thing that is going on live there.
