I was unaware that there was such a limit. Took a look at the code and it appears there is a threshold of 10 karma points required before one is able to perform negative moderations. So, as you have 10 karma points, you need only to submit a story and have it accepted (that's 3 points right there) or have a total of 3 informative/interesting/insightful/funny moderations to comments you post. This is part of the incentive structure, as I see it. It helps encourage positive contributions to the site.

I find that if I just try to submit comments that add some information or perspective on any given story, the karma takes care of itself.

P.S. I just upmodded the last comment you posted. =)

Thank you, martyb! I moderate and participate rarely. So when I chose to moderate this time, as you might expect, I was a little put off. Hey, maybe it was wanted to be that way, discussed fairly, then changed--all while I wasn't looking, which of course, is my oversight for not paying attention as I believe the moderation has been discussed at length.

That said, your advice on increasing my karma score is noted. I do not really wish to increase my karma (as a thing to do,) but I understand now all of what that means to my participation. Did I miss this in the guidelines when I searched? I'm really more interested in having it posted in the guidelines and perhaps why, like you've stated so well above.

I thank you for the mod, but only if you found it truly informative (oh I've written some stupid shit at times.)

Thanks again for checking it out. Next time I'll just use the admin address I just found. ;p

Not to worry, I mod 'em as I see 'em. I thought it deserved an upmod and gave it. If it were otherwise, I'd have modded down, as appropriate. When it comes to moderation, I have no favorites or axes to grind.

I just checked and it seems that, at this moment, you are up to a karma of 11. I also see a couple more comments you posted which were favorably moderated. Contribute something of value and earn some karma. That's the basic idea, but implemented through fallible humans, so don't be too dismayed if^w when something is moderated incorrectly. I just accept it happens at times and move on.

Oh, and thank you VERY MUCH for subscribing!

If I could mod your journal entry as funny I certainly would. I got a good chuckle from that thanks :)

Think about it, down-modding is definitely a micro-aggression which needs to be avoided. And like any good social justice warriors, we SN regulars exempt ourselves from this rule, because we know we are on the good side ;-)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Of course TheMightyBuzzard wouldn't implement something like that just on gut-feeling. Either it was a relict or it was decided at some point in open discussion. I don't think it is a bad thing, as it discourages creation of sockpuppet-accounts just to downmod someone.

Yeah, I'm not all pantywadded about it. I figure it was all honest. Either I just didn't seem to remember that way before or had never modded down before because my karmaic profile hasn't changed much. Probably a couple points up.

I've put it in my sig line now so I can passively agress about it instead of doing anything to actively change it.

Stack Overflow does something similar: you need 15 rep (2 karma) to vote up but 125 rep (13 karma) to vote down.

Plenty of other details differ, such as no negative rep, losing only 2 rep (0.2 karma) for being downvoted, but also a 1 rep cost to cast a downvote. This cost is important to discourage "disagree" downvoting, especially because you can answer and vote on the same question.
