I was originally a bit worried (based on the hot discussions here and in irc) about getting so many submissions that people would have to vote on literally thousands of choices.

However, at this point, about a day and a half in, I have only 21 name submissions, so apparently people are more interested in the vote itself than in thinking up good names. :-)

If you have been holding back because of my original fear - don't. It's probably still a good idea to limit your submisssion to just your very best though.

to be honest, the requirement to have the name available in all three TLDs .com .net .org limited my possible options. I had bought few domains earlier, but they weren't available in all three TLDs, so I didn't submit them for voting...

I don't argue that the requirement is wrong. Hard to decide, maybe it is a good one.

That's also the reason I haven't suggested any names this time. Some of my suggestions only makes sense in some of those TLDs.

If the reason for that requirement is to limit the chance of IP issues, as mentioned here [soylentnews.org], just say so, e.g. by changing the first criteria to "free of obvious IP issues" and drop the IMHO useless requirement of "available in .com, .net and .org".

BTW: What about the suggestions we have made months ago when the voting was mentioned the first time? Do we need to make those suggestions again or are they already on the list?

We need to make them again, it was said clearly.

Same with a domain I registered, and I'm thinking I shouldn't add mine in either. We meant that to be an ideal case, but it seems everyone is reading it as law. Might be too late to change the wording at this point.

Which is why the list will be much shorter than it needs to be and will be missing a lot of the good suggestions.

It almost feels like that rule was put in place to help soylentnews, since "they" already got that option in all three TLDs.

Might be too late to change the wording at this point.

It's a stupid rule and it should be changed ASAP! Extend the voting for a week, if needed. Just fix the rules, so we can get the good suggestions on the list. Otherwise a lot of us will feel that the voting was rigged, not what the community really wanted.

I like Soylent News. Logo and color should be green to make better play on Soylent Green, but I can see /. may want their color scheme back.

So, why get a third new name? Are you going drop all users again, so we can fight over 3 or 4 digit numbers?

I finally got the listed https://splentnews.org/ [splentnews.org] in my favourites in the right order for browsing and got the password cached to always let me in. :-)

Typical geek ethos: it is not the result/solution that counts, its the way you solve the problem.
