I dislike the notion of absolute political axes, but I view current Democrats as largely serving the role of watchdogs over past left victories. Eventually the Democrats are going to split when people figure out what a new American left looks like. I think people who want the new American left to look like the European left will probably still be disappointed though.
The Republicans are where they are because the baby boomers have hit the stage of the human life cycle where people are most conservative and most involved in politics. The next generation into that slot following them isn't going to be as large and may abandon some aspects of the current Republican platform. The Republican party as we know it is going to die out, and that's a good thing because the current Republican notion of an innovative conservative is toxic.
I find this stuff interesting, although I'm not terribly personally invested in any particular outcome. I'm more of an non-archist.
