from the stonewalling dept.

A team of independent investigators, probing the disappearance and alleged killing of 43 college students at the hands of criminal gangs in 2014 in Mexico, is set to dispute the government's account of what happened, reports said Friday.

[...] The international panel faced a sustained campaign of harassment, stonewalling and intimidation, The New York Times reported. The panel of experts alleged that the investigators endured planned attacks from Mexican news media and a refusal by the government to turn over documents or grant interviews with essential figures.

[...] The Mexican government had earlier concluded that the 43 students, who were in the city of Iguala in southwestern Mexico as part of a protest, were kidnapped by police officers working for criminal gangs, who then killed and incinerated them in a garbage dump of a nearby town.

The attorney general, who led the government probe, reportedly called the office's finding the "historic truth."

The independent investigators have opposed this version and maintained that the government's account of the events was based in part on confessions apparently extracted by torture. The panel also dismissed the theory that the students were burnt beyond identification at a rubbish dump as physically impossible.

Does anyone here think that this is the first busload of people to disappear in Mexico? Mostly, people disappearing are either A: defying a drug cartel or B: traveling through Mexico from "South of the Border". But, no on is immune to disappearing if they anger a narco boss, or a corrupt government official. In this case, the students angered multiple corrupt government officials.

Anyone who cares to keep up on conditions in Mexico, just forget about the main stream media. Try this instead: borderlandbeats instead. For those who have never seen a war zone, take this warning to heart: "BEWARE Some post may contain strong violent material, Discretion is advised."

Borderlandbeat was investigating this particular story long before the NYTimes even heard the story. The International Business Times? I'm not familiar with them, but it seems they are also late to the investigation.

Did not know about the 49, in my searching I didn't stumble across borderlandbeat, but i will check it in the future.

I chose IBTimes because it had a decent story on it, and the only others comparable at the time were from NYT and WSJ. Paywalls may apply was the reason for going to an alternative source.

IBT isn't part of the investigation. Its just a general purpose news concentrator which publishes a very eclectic assortment of stories.
Calling them "late to the investigation" implies a boat load of pejorative for merely publishing an article.
