I miss the internets of intranets. Those were the good old days, when nobody pushed automatic updates onto anything because disconnected operation was still useful and expected.

The Great Firewall is still connectivity, just like the tiny firewall I'm behind right now. I'm thinking disconnected machines that have no TCP/IP stack at all, are only reachable by LAN protocol or sneakernet. Today we call such machines old-school doorstops.
