  I think I get where you were going with that, so let's try again with a citation: If a word is to be capitalized mid-sentence then it needs to be a proper noun or name. A proper noun/name is defined as "a noun representing unique entities (such as India, Jupiter, Harry, or BMW), as distinguished from common nouns which describe a class of entities (such as city, animal, planet, person or car)", according to The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage.
  
  So, the question really boils down to whether or not we should treat the Internet as a proper noun. Since it's clearly a unique entity (IPv4 and IPv6 are protocols that run *on* the Internet, and Internet2 is generally considered as either a second entity in its own right or as an experimental subset *of* the Internet), I'm going with that it deserves the capital I.
