While I like that suggestion, deciding on what will become the in-jokes of the community via a poll and suggestions in the comments thereof seems somewhat contrived and artificial.

This. Internet community's and their associated memes aren't engineered - they evolve. In 6 months time there will be a slew of new memes and an emerging culture thriving here that will take hold powerfully, regardless of what engineered memes we try to force now. Just give it time and don't try too hard.
I for one welcome our naturally evolving meme overlords.
This! The cannibal thing is fine, but sooner or later something will grow organically from the people of Soylent, and then we'll know what it is! Let it happen...:)
