Seems like enabling Aero in Windows 7 adds some lag. With Aero enabled I get about 200ms in reaction time tests. Disabled it's about 180+ms. Video card is GeForce GTX 760. On my old XP machine I get slightly better reaction times, but that could be due to hardware differences (e.g. ATI video card). Monitor is the same.

There are some claims by others that when playing 3D games in fullscreen mode there is no or less additional lag.

I have no doubt that Aero adds a teeny tiny bit simply because it is using hardware acceleration, my question would be "when are you gonna be in a situation where that 20ms really matters"? as the only place and time I've sen disabling Aero having a really noticeable effect is on older Intel chipsets, but those chips were really weak to begin with so accelerated anything is gonna drag those down. On anything with any power at all, even the weakest APUs like the first gen Bobcat single cores? There isn't enough difference to matter.

That said and in the interest of full disclosure i disable Aero on my systems for a hacked version of Windows basic, but that is because I always liked the Vista Black theme and found the Aero effects kinda pointless. I still have Aero peek and Aero snap but the rest is turned off but I've never felt any lag one way or the other, i just prefer the Black look over see-through.
