Two men were arrested following last night's shooting at a Quebec City mosque that left six people dead and 19 wounded, in what Quebec's premier described as a "murderous act directed at a specific community."

Thirty-nine people escaped the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec (Islamic cultural centre of Quebec) in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood without injuries, according to Quebec provincial police Sgt. Christine Coulombe.

Initially, it was reported that eight people were wounded, but authorities updated that number to 19 Monday morning.

Five were still in critical condition in hospital Monday morning, including three people who are in intensive care. Another 13 people have been released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Coulombe said the people who died in the shooting, which occurred during Sunday evening prayers, ranged in age from 35 to 70.

That seems to be assuming a level of control and reasoning often missing in mass murderers.

The logical thinking pattern might be as simple as "whoo hoo love this new anti-depressant pill time to set a new high score" which is a well known pharmacology problem thats happened a zillion times. Weird to think you just give someone a pill and they start killing, but it certainly happens a lot over the last couple decades.

The problem of "I'm Shia they're Sunni therefore kaboom" can't be solved at the level of people willing to complain about it, by definition they're not the problem. Kind of like gun control, which only harasses non-criminals, therefore by definition doesn't prevent gun crime very much.

I sure did hear the "Allahu Ackbar" lie, but I think it was on the alt-right outlet BBC News [bbc.com].

The Quebec authorities have not identified the suspects, but Radio Canada quoted a source close to the investigation as saying that they were students at Laval University in Quebec City and one was of Moroccan origin.

An eyewitness told the radio station that two hooded people had burst into the mosque. One opened fire on those praying and shouted "Allahu Akbar", Arabic for "God is Great".

One of the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle but was arrested on a bridge leading to Orleans Island, local media reported. The suspect had called the police himself, Radio Canada said.

It should be easy to tell what's fake news and what's not. If we don't hear anything more about this shooting from the press, the shooter was Moslem. If we don't hear about more from the RWNJs (or if they twist the narrative to blame the victims because how dare they engage in free exercise of religion), the shooter was Christian.

The "facts" have repeatedly changed on this one, on multiple major news sites, at a guess it is major incident confusion and "nobody is sure what happened yet" behind it rather than conspiracy by SJW / alt-right / whatever.

Apparently a moroccan immigrant _was_ arrested but has _now_ been released, and the other suspect is white canadian - but that is just what the news is saying at the moment. Could all change tomorrow.

Tell that to the White House!

It is usually the case that there is significant confusion in the wake of attacks of this sort. And local police did apparently arrest two suspects at first: both Bissonnette along with el Khadir. And until the investigation is complete, one cannot know for certain what the motives here were. One should be careful about trying to infer too much from a hodgepodge of Facebook “likes” and, this early, even anecdotal claims about his political views. As for reports that someone yelled “Allahu akbar,” it is perfectly natural that someone in a mosque would say that upon seeing a homicidal killer randomly shooting people, or it’s possible that the shooter said it mockingly.

But this is exactly why no responsible news organization, let alone the White House, should rush to depict the shooter as Muslim and of Moroccan descent when so little is known about what happened. Yet not only did Fox and the Trump White House do exactly that, but worse, neither has retracted or corrected their claims long after it became clear that it was false:

I'm having some difficulty in understanding why an Islamic terrorist attacked a mosque. That is not something they typically do is it? Perhaps I'm not exposed to enough foreign news, but I'm not able to recall any incident in which radical Islam was taking out people in mosques. Streets, malls, bazaars, even hospitals, but not where dutiful and faithful Muslims are actually praying to Allah.

I'm very curious about what actually happened.

I never understand people claiming special sentences for terrorists or executions or torture etc. If the law does not allow for those punishments then society needs to reflect if it wants to change that. If it doesn't want to change that, then, a bit of reflection (oh God in this world of sound bytes) on why we overreact so much on the heat of the moment would be a good prescription.

That story is pretty poorly written. Awfully poorly written, actually. First, the story establishes that there was only one shooter - but it goes on the repeat earlier claims that it was a coordinated attack by two shooters.

"In what was described as a coordinated attack, witnesses say the two gunmen wearing black fired indiscriminately into the dozens of worshipers — including families — in the mosque."

But, yes, it does say the police have identified the shooter, as opposed to some random member of the public recognizing him.

      From the article:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the episode a “terrorist attack on Muslims.”

Are Muslim Canadians not Canadians? Wouldn't this be a domestic terrorist attack against Canadians? Or are we giving them special treatment? Or is it difficult for people to accept the fact hat anyone can be a victim of terrorism, including Muslims?

        DIE IN A FIRE.

It's not a attack on Canadians, but on very particular and specific subset of Canadians. Recognizing that it is an identifiable group that is being targeted is not "special treatment."

When a terrorist attacks a mosque, it doesn't affect most Canadian's decision to go to Tim Horton's or not. It will certainly be top-of-mind awareness for a Muslim, and might affect their decision to go to prayers or not.

Actually, maybe don't die in a fire. I hear 3rd degree burns are almost as painful as xenophobic/racist fucks trying to subvert discourse with malicious sophistry.

      Good article, thanks.

But can someone riddle me this: in the article it says: "The suspect followed several profiles that espouse right-wing ideologies, including that of Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader of France's National Front." So I've been checking her out on Wikipedia, and so far I haven't seen anything that should provoke someone to go around shooting anyone. In fact, as far as 'far-right' people go, she seems pretty moderate to me. So am I missing something about her, or is CBC pulling crap out of the air? I mean, why mention her, or single her out as an example of anything having to do with this?

Runaway is a muslim. I kid you not! Runaway is not a real Soylentil, he is a fake news sockpuppet being controlled from a boilerroom operation in Macedonia. This was all in the news recently. Runaway, not a real American, not really a hillbilly redneck idjiot, just a 15 year old Macedonian girl trying to make a living in these tough economic times. Of course, a little extra from the Russians doesn't hurt. And no problem working for the Russians, as a Muslim, pretending to be Runaway, because lying in the service of the faith is no sin! Runaway, in persona, has said as much many times. So, Runaway is lying, he is a Muslim, he did say "Allahu Ackbar", and he didn't say "It's a trap!" Said by Admiral Ahkbar. So now two things are obvious rebuttals: Runaway1956 is a Muslim, and "that's no moon!".
