    I duplicate with cp -a, the GNU command. Preserves permissions, symlinks, everything. For backups I use mksquashfs.
    E.g. "mksquashfs ./* ../mybackup.sqfs -comp xz -Xbcj x86 -noappend -no-xattrs"
