On February 27, World Health Organization published its first ever list of the top 12 "priority pathogens."

The list was drawn up in a bid to guide and promote research and development (R&D) of new antibiotics, as part of WHO's efforts to address growing global resistance to antimicrobial medicines.

The list highlights in particular the threat of gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics. These bacteria have built-in abilities to find new ways to resist treatment and can pass along genetic material that allows other bacteria to become drug-resistant as well.

[...] "Antibiotic resistance is growing, and we are fast running out of treatment options. If we leave it to market forces alone, the new antibiotics we most urgently need are not going to be developed in time."

[...] The most critical group of all includes multidrug resistant bacteria that pose a particular threat in hospitals, nursing homes, and among patients whose care requires devices such as ventilators and blood catheters. They include Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and various Enterobacteriaceae (including Klebsiella, E. coli, Serratia, and Proteus). They can cause severe and often deadly infections such as bloodstream infections and pneumonia.

These bacteria have become resistant to a large number of antibiotics, including carbapenems and third generation cephalosporins – the best available antibiotics for treating multi-drug resistant bacteria.

... perhaps we could trap them? We humans mastered micro-structures fabrication, perhaps we can construct little mechanical traps with bait inside and let the little bugs swim into them never to appear out again? Or maybe harpoon them and inject some nasty enzymes when they come near it and the trap senses their specific chemical fingerprint coinciding with, say ... flagellum movement?

if people could afford to become sick (and thus have no working income) they would NOT dread being sick for a few days instead of
ab(using) anti-biotics for every each and little "sign" of maledy?

the way i see it, there must be some place were people are constantly being infected and reinfected and are constantly sick and on the verge
of losing the battle and dying.
i imagine people on the verge of turning from human into zombie and avoiding it by swallowing anti-biotics by the shovel load per day.
how else should the creation and evolution of anti-biotic resistant bacteria be imagined?

some people don't finish "their course" because they feel better but drug companies (?) want us to believe that you should NOT stop taking the pills even though you're feeling better? like, duh, i am feeling better so the bug is gone? or like, i am growing a super drug-resistant bug FOR WHICH I AM IMMUNE but will kill everybody else .. because .. duh? what?

Another contributing factor is prescribing unnecessary medicine. People come in with a vague sense of unease, and they want SOMETHING, and doctor isn't allowed (or won't take the risk he might be wrong) to prescribe a sugar pill, so he prescribes penicillin or something. This means the medicine is getting exposed to bacteria/etc for no benefit, but with all of the costs intact.

Okay, here's an idea. If people come in with a vague sense of unease and they want SOMETHING, then the doctor should prescribe one of the erectile dysfunction boner drugs and send them on their way. It is something. Not a sugar pill. But it's not unnecessary antibiotics either. If that doesn't work, then the doctor might try this extraordinary idea of coming up with a diagnosis, after several more office visits, but prior to prescribing a drug. Diagnosis -- a novel new idea.

Other way around, at least in the US. The problem here is rich fuckers who will spend weeks doctor shopping until they find someone who will prescribe high strength antibiotics over the phone because the rich fuck has the sniffles and they demand antibiotics "just to be safe" -- while being "too busy" to actually go see a competent doctor who would probably tell them to shut up and drink some tea. But say something like that to the rich little snowflake and they'll spend virtually unlimited amounts of time and money to get you fired because HOW DARE a medical professional claim to know medicine better than some dumbass MBA. I've seen this shit happen.

Last time I had an infection I had exactly two options -- pay $300 out of my own pocket to get a prescription that week from a clinic, or wait SIX MONTHS for an appointment that might be partially covered by my insurance. And that's with somewhat decent insurance (Cigna), it's not like I'm on friggin' medicaid. The people who can't afford to get sick can't probably afford to get a prescription either. Antibiotics may be cheap, but the prescription for them isn't.
