"The BBC reports that a bounty of 10,000 Euro ($13,700) is 'being offered to catch the people who took the online multiplayer game Wurm offline.' A blog entry on their website says, 'we can offer 10,000 Euro for any tips or evidence leading to a conviction of the person responsible for this attack.'

For those unfamiliar, Wurm Online is, according to Wikipedia, a 3D MMORPG from Sweden that came out in 2006. The client 'is developed in Java and uses OpenGL.'

Presumably they're hoping someone with inside knowledge of the attack will be tempted to inform on the main culprits. Or maybe Microsoft's commendable botnet-fighting unit has a chance to claim the money?"

I would not be surprised if their own update included a bug that somehow makes it look like they are under a DDOS attack. Striking back might have a very interesting effect in that case!

The apparent timing of the DDOS, coming shortly after they issued an update, suggests this could be a possibility, though I would hope they made quite sure it wasn't some bug they'd introduced before offering a 10K Euro bounty.

Editing posts? Wouldn't that also necessitate code to handle re-moderation? And meta-re-moderation?

That's quite a lot of complexity just to deal with problems that could be caught using the preview feature.

Possibly though, there could be an option available in the preferences, for users who don't feel well enough protected at the moment, to have a 2nd preview. This 2nd preview would show your comment on screen, nested below all its 'ancestor' comments. There would be almost nothing else on that screen, except "Are you really sure you want to post this?" and buttons "Yes" and "No, go back and edit it further".

To properly handle editing posts, you need proper versioning for posts. It would be okay to just invalidate moderation, but you really want to be able to have every user see older versions of posts to see if a reply changes meaning based on what was said earlier. There are also some legal implications: if you can't edit your own posts then you can't be compelled by a court (or C&D letter) to do so, they have to go through the hosting site, which may be in a completely different jurisdiction.

Like that one time the EvE updater deleted c:\boot.ini :) (http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID= 651473)
CCP took full blame for that one though.

That incident provided proof that not all EvE players are nerds. No self-respecting nerd would be caught dead without a bootable CD that gives r/w access to the bootable Windows partition so that repairs can be made (and boot.ini ain't rocket science). It wasn't that big of a deal for anyone with an ounce of nerd cred. Huge drama, on the other hand, for the ignorant masses.

That incident also served to reinforce the idea that CCP has ZERO quality control practices in place that are worth a damn. That's another story, however, they routinely demonstrate that in hilarious ways several times a year. Every year.
