Demand for the visas far exceeds the 85,000 cap, meaning that the government has to ration them to firms by lottery. Indian outsourcing firms like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which provides low-cost back-office services, are now the biggest employers of H-1B workers. Analysing data compiled by Théo Négri of jobsintech.io, The Economist found that between 2012 and 2015 the three biggest Indian outsourcing firms—TCS, Wipro and Infosys—submitted over 150,000 visa applications for positions that paid a median salary of $69,500. In contrast, America's five biggest tech firms—Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google and Microsoft—submitted just 31,000 applications, and proposed to pay their workers a median salary of $117,000.
The Economist reassures us that, "Given that the unemployment rate for college graduates sits at 2.5%, it is fair to say that most native workers displaced by H-1Bs land on their feet."

If the H1-B got the job direct then as soon as they lost that job they went back to their home country. If they get it though a contracting agency they have something like 30 days to get another job.
The problem is the agency. Let them come over and take the job. If they lose that job give them 30 days. Um? Really? How many of you could find a job in 30 days after unexpectedly losing your job?
Give them 90 days to find a job. Oh, BTW. Ensure employers pay the local median wage plus 20% to ensure they have skills that are in demand.
I've worked with a lot of H1-B's, they are just like us. Some are great, some are good, some are wankstains. Deport the wankstains, give those that are great full citizenship, and figure out what to do with the vast majority that are simply good.
My ducks are not in a row. I don't know where some of them are, and I'm pretty sure one of them is a turkey.

India is pretty big, but I think they really just don't give a crap about such details. They are a recruiter, last I heard it doesn't matter where they come from they only care about getting that sweet commission.

I too have gotten a slew of calls from sub-contractors to wipro, infosys, cognizant and l&t. The pattern is eerily similar - they start by insisting that market rate is not available. After I refuse the position they magically come up with marketrate for the position or stop calling in about half the cases. In some cases they have average to no-technical interview but oddly seemed panicked to hire with "one week". I received a job offer within two days after a single interview in which the contracting firm told the hiring manager I had been "technically vetted" when no such vetting had occurred. I declined the position.
Sloppy form processing, incorrect titles, demands for full birth dates, salary histories, requests for copies of social security and drivers licenses, and other irregular practices seem common (I provide my phone area code for my birthdate and the last four digits of the same for my "social security" number, I decline all requests for copies of my documents).
I have no idea what's going on, but I smell fear and panic and I think thousands of (American) jobs may be coming back real soon now.
Why do we keep buying and using products from companies like google, apple, and facebook when they clearly want to send our jobs away? These companies are already super-rich and I feel that it's likely many of those dollars in their bank accounts came straight from our own pockets.
Why subsidize multi-billion dollar corporations with our own salaries?

This sort of perspective is exactly why Trump is now president. It's not just your complete lack of any connection with reality I'm talking about but also the incredible hyperbole. We have useful idiots running around in little black outfits trying to disrupt and hurt people for having the wrong views while calling them "fascist nazis." I mean can you get any more lack of self awareness? Trump isn't Hitler, he's not a Russian plant. I think if the election was run tomorrow against another Hillary-like individual we'd likely see not only another Trump victory but one with a much wider margin of victory. Trump's supporters aren't going anywhere and this sort of behavior isn't going to convince liberals that chose to not vote for the democratic candidate to change their mind.
2020 will be a razor sharp election where Trump will have a big natural edge as the incumbent. Given the tides of society, I think the only way 'we' might win is if the democrats run an anti-establishment populist, but even then we're going to be torn apart by things like political correctness, identity politics and immigration. These are all major issues that many hold as very near single issue deciders. And more importantly, I think this election has shown people are no longer willing to just vote for a turd because it's less bad than a shit. So running on "I'm not as bad as your other choice. Vote for me!" isn't going to cut it.
Should be interesting.

I'm not going out on a limb by saying that "master's, professional, and doctoral degrees" are more likely to end up in employment, and mixing those in with bachelor's degrees is obviously misleading. Yes, the philosophy Ph.D is probably harder to use, but all those MDs, dentists, nurse practitioners, etc. will skew the data.

Yup. Standard tactic used by most colleges. They'll claim *everyone* gets a job after graduation; what they DON'T tell you is how many of those "jobs" are just flipping burgers at McDonald's. The numbers you actually want to look at is how many find a job *in their chosen field*. I bet that number is significantly lower.
And there's absolutely now way in hell that the writers and editors at The Economist don't know this; it seems they have an interest in downplaying the unemployment problem...
