Adam West, the actor best known for playing Batman in the 1960s television series, has died aged 88 of leukaemia. He is remembered by fans for his kooky, exaggerated portrayal of the superhero in the ABC show, which ran for three seasons from 1966 to 1968.
West once said that he played Batman “for laughs, but in order to do [that], one had to never think it was funny. You just had to pull on that cowl and believe that no one would recognise you.”
In a statement, his family said: “Our dad always saw himself as the Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero.”

The 1960s Batman was a live-action comic book.

you are PREZACTLY right on that one, kamper, it was camp/comic book style done right...
they really carried over the frenetic, goofy, and PUNNY stuff the original early batman comic books had, and one of the few shows that was pitch-perfect in doing the translation to teevee...
mr west played the part exactly right, with equal parts comedic farce, faux seriousness, and rollicking super-heroism...
like you said: "ZONK! POW!", that never got old...
.
all the later dark batman junk which took itself too seriously, just never was really the original batman to me...
.
the other semi-cultish movie i can think of that was done EXTREMELY well as a 'comic book' styled movie, was fifth element; again, hit just the right notes of not taking itself too seriously, and just making a fun story to enjoy without any bullshit, over-earnest PC crap overlaid...

When I say we'll miss Adam West greatly, I know I speak for everyone in and from New York City (he called it Gotham). Mayor West was something you don't often see: a politician who was honest to a fault. He was a huge, huge role model for me. He still is. Mayor Adam West, we salute your selfless service to our city. Our great, great city. #Heroes [twitter.com]

Adam West was like Martin on The Simpsons, he didn't come on often but when he did he made the whole fucking show. He's easily my favorite character on Family Guy, though unfortunately like Randall Munroe Seth MacFarlane became a sanctimonious partisan prick so far up his own ass he could see his own molars, and the shows (including South Park) are now all just a bunch of overpreachy bullshit.
