    3 + 4 = 7
    5 + 11 = 16
    6 + 6 = 12

Go diagonal-down once from column 1, add that number, move to the right. Moving from 3 to 4 wrapping around back to to the top.

Is this the answer? Beats me. It's an answer.

I've submitted it as takyon with SoylentNews.org as the hometown.

        Good luck!

I wonder how many answers they've gotten. Just went up this morning so I think we've got a good chance...

You were robbed!! I think your explanation made a lot more sense.

Solution to last week’s Riddler Express

Congratulations to 👏 Chris Riddle (!) 👏 of San Diego, winner of the previous Express puzzle!

A very specific logic underlies the grid of numbers below, and X is somewhere between 1 and 14. What, specifically, is X?

        6 4 7
        5 X 12
        3 11 16
X is 8. Or, more illustratively, X is “eight.” The logic underlying the grid concerns the length of the spelled-out word for each number. The length of the numbers increases across each row and down each column. In the top row, for example, 6 has three letters, 4 has four letters, and 7 has five letters. Continuing that pattern in the middle row, 5 has four letters and 12 has six letters, so our answer must have five letters. We’ve already used 3 and 7. That means it’s 8.

Some answers are more correct than others.

The official answer is wrong. Because e.g. 4 is also "quater", "quattro" and a ton of other words of different lengths. At best is a locally valid solution, and locally valid is not "right".

      Yeah, that definitely works.

I'm not seeing any other patterns jump out...
