Women and girls with autism may face greater challenges with real world planning, organization and other daily living skills, according to a study published in the journal Autism Research.

Led by researchers within the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children's National Health System, the National Institute of Mental Health, and The George Washington University, the study is the largest to date examining executive function-including the ability to make a plan, get organized, and follow through on the plan as needed-and adaptive skills-ability to perform basic daily tasks like getting up and dressed or making small talk- in women and girls with ASD.

"Our goal was to look at real world skills, not just the diagnostic behaviors we use clinically to diagnose ASD, to understand how people are actually doing in their day to day lives," says Allison Ratto Ph.D., , a psychologist in the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Children's National and one of the study's authors. "When parents were asked to rate a child's day-to-day functioning, it turns out that girls were struggling more with these independence skills. This was surprising because in general, girls with ASD have better social and communication skills during direct assessments. The natural assumption would be that those communication and social skills would assist them to function more effectively in the world, but we found that this isn't always the case."

The study collected parent-reported data from several rating scales of executive function and adaptive behavior, including the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Parent Form (BRIEF) and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-II (VABS-II). The group included 79 females and 158 males meeting clinical criteria for autism spectrum disorders, ranging in ages from 7 to 18 years old. The groups were matched for intelligence, age and level of autism and ADHD symptoms.

Bigger tits are undoubtedly the result of natural selection. I know that my own personal selection favors the more mammarous types. In fact, I know of only a very few men that do not tend toward that desire, and I suspect homosexual tendencies when they express that preference. My own nephew claimed he wanted to be a plastic surgeon when he grew up, but he would never do a breast reduction because that was a slap in the face of God. Smart kid.

Here's a rare on topic post without any schoolboy giggling about no chicks allowed in our clubhouse. As if they could stand the smell and mess anyway.

    1) Two surprises: 1a) There's a journal named "Autism Research" 1b) AFAIK its not been made into a meme on /b/, /r9k/, or /pol/ although its obviously prime raw meat.

    2) This is the journalist's interpretation of the actual paper so I'm a bit mystified. AFAIK ASD is a spectrum behavior diagnosis its not like having cancer where you pretty much have it or not. So the "real" story is observed behavior of autistic girls shows lower than expected executive functioning etc. What I don't understand is "The natural assumption would be that those communication and social skills would assist them to function more effectively in the world, but we found that this isn't always the case." Isn't that kind of the point that a girl can giggle and socially schmose people to get stuff done which is why they're diagnosed less often than, say, moody teen boys who don't have social game as a crutch to lean against to avoid the diagnosis?

I guess what I mean is something like #2 above means the simplistic interpretation of "girls have a lower score than boys with a given disease" isn't actually what they discovered, what they seem to have quantified is good enough social game bypasses the demands of the autism diagnosis test such that the girls who none the less fail the test, really fail badly. Maybe by analogy like affirmative action, if you give the girls an extra ten points at selection time, after selection time, they're gonna fall flat on their face when compared to the boys who didn't get the extra gender based ten points. Kind of ... duh?

I know my daughter got away with a lot of stuff in her youth with giggles and "mommie I luv u gimmie hug" crap, whereas my son in similar scenario got the somewhat stricter WTF are you doing reaction (I donno, breaking a toy, or teasing a sibling, for sake of example) I think it quite likely there are girls on the spectrum un-diagnosed who merely have a good enough social game going, so naturally the self selection would be for the female diagnosed cases to be more severe.

I was going to give you kudos for an actual thoughtful post, though your immediately preceding post above unfortunately more than counters the positives here by unnecessary trolling.

Anyhow, I'm surprised that you're surprised there's a journal called Autism Research. It's a huge area of study. I have a friend who works with musical training for such kids and publishes a bunch of research on the topic -- and he's working within a subspecialty of music education within general education for autistic kids within the broader field of autism research. It's a condition that affects roughly 1 in 70 kids.

FYI, there are several journals [researchautism.net] devoted specifically to autism research, as well as obviously all the mainstream journals that carry more general content.

yes... I really have a hard time believing VLM was surprised by this that there is medical research on the condition.

Does VLM actually just think they're retards or something and need to be placed in a home that should have its funding cut since these are just drains on society? It'd save on vaccine costs too, or so I hear.

Anyway I think a good case study of anti-social autistic women can include Marisa Mayer or whatever her name is, in case VLM needs to be directed towards a functional one and how this differs from those women and children that are less fortunate and how it affects them in our society.

Ms. Yahoo had everything she wanted: She's smart, she had the looks at the time, and was missing a few social cues as to how to behave with other people. She was able to use her endowed gifts and continue to be incredibly antisocial and be very well rewarded for it.

" The natural assumption would be that those communication and social skills would assist them to function more effectively in the world"

Absolutely not a natural assumption unless one thinks that females survive and possibly prosper (if they do) mostly due to communication and social skills and not due to their abilities, achievements, intelligence, and/or personality traits.

See what they did there? Why don't they throw on "beauty" and "sex appeal" on top of that for good measure? It is after all what they are actually saying even though they most likely think they're "fighting the good fight".

Focusing on gender etc. rather than individuals is a losing game, until that changes so-called feminists, anti-racists, politically correct, and so forth are their own worst enemies. Not that the rest of us ought to care but I guess I did simply because it's so fucking stupid.

decided years ago to stop caring and just do what I needed to do, and to Hell with anyone who doesn't like it.

And that is one of the bigger difference between gender roles in our society. As A boy, I assumed that "just do what I needed to do" was the default state, and the exceptional choice would be to try and cater to people wishes.

I really like not being expected to try and follow people expectations: being a man is convenient. No one gives a shit that I don't care, and do whatever I want. No one ever cares that I'm a crazy wacko.

Yyyyyyup. I envy men that. It really, *really* rubs a lot of people the wrong way when a woman is anything but a compliant people-pleaser. Like, dangerously so in some cases.

Inevitably all the "gender traitor"-caliber insults come out. "What are you, a fuckin' dyke?!" is apparently one of their favorites (because we ALL KNOW that any woman doing anything besides cooking, cleaning, sexual favors, or some unholy combination of all three is gay...). More correct than they know, and I am certainly having more sex than they are, or at least I *hope* they're not doing anything that carries the risk of reproduction...
