Arthur T Knackerbracket has found the following story on CNET:

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is offering a clowns-only screening of Stephen King's "It," the classic horror story featuring Pennywise the murderous clown.

There are three clowns-only showings, all at Austin, Texas theaters on Sept. 9, the day after "It" opens in the US.

"For this special clown screening of IT, all attendees should arrive dressed as a clown in order to attend," the Alamo Drafthouse website explains. "Please arrive early and join us in the Barrel O' Fun (CNET note: The whaaat, now?) beginning at 5:30pm for an IT pre-party where we will have face-painters available for clown touch-ups, a photo booth, raffles for prizes, and other terrifying merriment. Please arrive in your own Pennywise best and be ready to float with us."

[Ed Note: The fear of clowns is Coulrophobia. The wikipedia page does NOT have pictures, which I find mildly amusing.]

Alamo Drafthouse has a history doing quirky things like this. They're a theater where you can get served a full meal and drinks at your seat. Little shelves sit in front of the comfy chairs (cue the Spanish Inquisition).

FWIW, I'm a fan of the establishment, but am in no way related business-wise, except as a happy customer.

Owner Tim Teague and his wife started it in California some years ago, but it didn't catch on, so they moved to Texas and are now in several cities.

Besides movie sing-alongs and other such stuff, one of the really fun things they do is the Rolling Road Show, where they mount a big inflatable screen and show films in a themed setting. Jaws was done in Lake Travis outside of Austin, so you're watching the film while floating - at night - in the middle of a very deep lake (fortunately sans' sharks). Goonies was done in a cave. They found the actual house where Texas Chainsaw Massacre was filmed (now, believe it or not, a Bed & Breakfast), so you'd see the house on the screen, then look to the right and see the real house.

They also occasionally collaborated with an alas, now defunct comedy troupe called Mr. Sinus Theater, three guys who would stand off to the side and riff the movie. Usually those were at one of the theateres, but one time they did Xanadu at a roller rink, with the male lead (Michael Beck) as a guest, and afterwards we all went in and skated for a while. I remember one of the Sinus guys accidentally plowed into Beck and knocked him flat. No major injuries though.

(MST3K later sued Mr. Sinus for likeness of the name, so they became Mr. Pancake Theater, but the thrill was gone so they soon disbanded. Never really did care for MST3K before, definitely not after that bone-headed move.)

By far, though, my favorite Rolling Road Show was when they ran the Big Lebowski at a bowling alley. We all watched the film outside, then went in and bowled for a couple of hours - of course, with complementary White Russians. The actual Dude was there (Jeff Dowd, not Bridges), and we got to bowl a frame with him.

So, a clown-only screening of IT is something perfectly natural coming from these guys.
