According to a study published in the June issue of the journal Alcohol, it appears that Alcohol may protect trauma patients from later complications.

From the article:

Injured patients who have alcohol in their blood have a reduced risk for developing cardiac and renal complications, according to a study from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. Among patients who did develop complications, those with alcohol in their blood were less likely to die.

"After an injury, if you are intoxicated there seems to be a substantial protective effect," says UIC injury epidemiologist Lee Friedman, author of the study. "But we don't fully understand why this occurs."

In patients who had alcohol in their blood, cardiac complications were reduced by 23.5 percent. Renal complications were reduced by 30 percent.

As alcohol impairs one's ability to avoid traumatic injury (like a car accident), not drinking sounds like the real win. But, if you are in an accident, the booze seemed to help with your chances to survive.

"no officer, I wasn't drunk before the impact! I filled my airbags with alcohol for a higher chance to survive!"
    .
TFA doesn't say if they considered the vasodilation from alcohol as a likely mechanism for the reduced risk of cardiac problem. I ain't no MD, but that kinda makes sense...

You see off'ser, I keep dis here bottle of booze in da glove box in case of ass-i-dent. Doctors say you're more likely ta ser-vive trauma if yous got alcohol in your system. So once I came to and realized that that SOB hit me, and I noticed I was bleeding all da fuck over, I went to my glovebox an' grabbed this bottle I keep here in case of ass-i-dent. It's part of my first aid kit. And I call 9-1-1, and started drinkin' to make sure I ser-vive an' sue that mother-fucker that hit me. You heard that al-co-hall in da blood stream makes you more likely ta ser-vive an ax-i-dent? I don't normally drink liquor, but doctors have dun research an everything.

Oh, those beers? Naw, that ain't part of my first aid kit. I was drinkin' dem earlier.

This actually happened to me. The circumstances beforehand were much more frightening than the actual accident (which is why I'm so goddamn paranoid), but I walked away from the whole thing with a sore chest, scraped knees, (from hitting the bottom of the dashboard when my body slid up from the impact), and no conviction or any kind of legal action taken despite the cops having shown up to the scene of the wreckage. It happened in Los Angeles county, and that's all I'm gonna say about it.

I was under care of a doctor at the time.

I know a guy who beat a drunk driving charge simply by opening his trunk, removing a sixpack and pounding them all to "settle his nerves". That's what he told the other driver, and others to stopped to help. (Nobody was seriously hurt, but two cars were pretty much totaled.)

There was no sign beer in the passenger compartment. But some of us know where he had been before hand, and some of us had often seen that beat up six pack he always had in the trunk "in case of an accident". The cops never even charged him, and never gave him a breath test either. In those days, they didn't do Blood Alcohol tests (which would have detected the lie), only breathalyzer tests which were notoriously inaccurate in those days. (In other words: Don't try this these days.)

I was young and foolish then, and actually thought it was a good idea for a while.

Reminds me of the joke where one party in the car accident offers the other liquor to "settle nerves" but then doesn't drink but waits for the cops to arrive ;).
