The new SPHERE instrument for the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope recently achieved 'first light'. The New Scientist is reporting on an image they released this week that calls into question whether Frodo really did snuff out the Eye of Sauron.
So, how long before the MPAA goes after the HR 4796 system for breach of copyright?
On a more serious note, the image has amazing detail. This should make it easier to detect and analyze planets orbiting other stars.

It's not a screensaver, its a wallpaper. Completely different.
One is the often moving image that appears when you don't do anything with your machine for a while. The other is the image behind your desktop icons.

What makes this a bad screensaver? It doesn't need to move. Heck, mine have been blank black screens for...forever. But the eye of Sauron star thing would be a nice screensaver. You never see your desktop screen anyways.

Now with non-CRT screens it probably doesn't make a difference, but static images used to burn into CRTs if left (older ones anyway). I've seen a number of terminals that have had the login message burnt in. Thats why screen savers where invented and why they weren't meant to be static images, although they could just blank the screen.
