Being upset with a post because you don't agree with it or because you make it mad does not automatically make it offtopic or redundant. There are flamebait, troll, and overrated moderations for that purpose that serve that purpose. The reason for mis-moderating something is being so upset about a posts content that you want to hide it and have people ignore the post, and I think readers are much more likely to ignore offtopic and redundant than they are the other three.

Maybe instead of just getting mad and trying to hide a post you disagree with you can post a rebuttal and let the ideas stand on their own, eventually one or the other will be moderated up and you know the idea the community favors more (or rather that the percentage of the community that moderates favors). I imagine if people stopped overusing flamebait/troll/overrated we might again get to a point where I can ignore those posts because I can assume they weren't just moderated down because of partisan bullshit.

Hell even if you disagree with someone if they make a good point there is no reason to not moderate them according to that posts merit.

I don't mind being moderated troll, flamebait, or getting an overrated. What I mind is the misapplication of moderation types to push an agenda. A troll post is a troll post, a flamebait is a flamebait, a offtopic post is an offtopic post, and a redundant post should be moderated redundant.

Just like reddit wit +1/-1 points, they just want you gone, hidden, and a -1 is a tool that does that just fine.

Which is why *chan style boards do a lot better at resisting outside attempts at coercion. Although signal to noise ratio is poor, the regulars can smell low effort trolling a mile away and would just subconsciously filter them out.
The moderators themselves are still a weakness though.

This entire journal is redundant! Do you not recall when you tried to force measures like this through the Roman Senate, and you were roundly rebuked? Sulla, you need to take the criticism! You are not being flamebaity, and Jove knows you are not being a troll, not having the skill set, but when you keep repeating the same old talking points from your Cartheginian masters (or in this case, Australian), we can and will mod you redundant. I hear talk from some Soylentils that we should mod you "frojack", but that is, apparently, not a mod we have yet. Semper Fidelis, you traitorious bastard!

The constitutional reforms for the Senate were completely successful at the time of my death even allowing me to retire to a private life allowing the Republic to continue on its own. While I was off saving the Republic from Mithridates the Senate was besieged by Marius and the populares who installed un-elected persons into positions of authority. The power of the Tribunes was limited, limits on how long you had to go between ranks were put in place or strengthened as necessary, size of Senate was increased to better represent the needs of the governed. Sounds like every attempt I made at reform was successful, perhaps you are thinking about that failure Marius.

talking points from your Cartheginian masters

I think perhaps you should hit the books. Carthage was burned and sown with salt by the great Scipio Aemilianus Africanus eight years before my birth, Scipio gets all the credit for ending the Carthaginian menace.

No, those three emphatically do *not* serve that purpose. There is literally a "Disagree" mod.

Evidently I don't use downmods often and so did not pay attention to the options, but there totally is a disagree. As I understand it though the disagree mod is a 0-sum mod and does not effect score, it just tags on the disagree to some posts. I have a feeling the same people using the redundant/offtopic still wont use disagree as without the moderation point change it doesn't work as a censor.

There was a story about OK Cupid, it's a site where guys try to get women. And I warned people, Tinder is the same company. Match.Com is the same company. Plenty of Fish is the same company. And it's an alt-left company. Run by Barry Diller who also runs Fox Broadcasting (terrible person). And a Moderator said, that's Off Topic. It couldn't be any closer to the topic. Unless I just repeated the story. Which would be Redundant. It was a normal tweet, it should have been moderated Normal. Why don't we see tweets moderated Normal? I never see that, I don't think I ever see that. I see some tweets that are normal, they don't get moderated that way. Sad!

The Moderators are very powerful. Because they can do the Spam mod. Which the administrators look at. They say they look at that. But they're not always fair. And it takes away a lot, a lot of Karma. And when your Karma is drained, they stop you from tweeting. You look at Fakefuck39, she can only tweet twice a day. And her tweets start out with Negative Score, it's a terrible situation for her. Because she criticized the administrators. And criticized a lot of other people.

And they have IP Karma, it makes it hard to tweet. Even for someone else who shares your phone. Or computer, if you use the computer. When your Karma is drained, it makes it hard for anyone to tweet from your phone. The Karma follows the cyber of your phone (or computer). You want to tweet again, it can be hard. And maybe, probably, you have to get a new phone so the cyber changes. Very expensive!

And the administrators are getting ready to hide our journals. When our Karma goes down, our journals will be hidden. I don't think they're hiding them yet, because I was reading an interesting journal by one of our Fascists, by Painfreeme who has a great service -- what sounds like a great service -- for our Fasci. And Painfreeme didn't make any tweets or submit any stories. Which, I think, those are the ways we can get Karma. So maybe, probably, Painfreeme has Zero Karma. But I could see his journal.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, that "The Donald" does can be rated as "normal". I really mean, absolutely NOTHING. For instance, most of us have exhaust fans in our bathrooms, to get rid of really offensive odors. The Donald? He has a small fucking JET TURBINE in his ceiling. And sometimes, he throws a lighted match at the turbine, creating a jet of flame extending 30 to 60 feet into the air. Normal? NFW

No. Your feels have nothing to do with how a post should be moderated. The only moderation in the list that is a synonym for "fuck you" is Disagree. Anything else and you're abusing your moderator privileges.

If the tone of the post is designed to invoke anger then it certainly falls into the flamebait and troll categories. Overrated is just that, an up-modded post that in your opinion is overrated.

Exactly. Their motivation for posting the comment is what's in question rather than how you feel about it. If in your opinion they believe what they are saying and made no special effort at pissing people off while posting it, Flamebait or Troll moderations are an abuse of the moderation system.

Overrated... If there weren't a genuine use for it for when a provably wrong comment gets modded up before being corrected by a child comment or a rather average comment getting one too many upmods, I'd argue for its removal. What it does not mean though is "I wish to attack your views via consensus rather than reasoned debate". Moderations are not like/dislike buttons.

Thankfully we, on average, appear to be correcting negative abuses as a community. That's my impression anyway. It's a subjective issue, so "SELECT * FROM moderatorlog WHERE val < 0 AND validity = 0;" wouldn't really be possible.
