California's efforts to restrict Elon Musk's flamethrowers go down in flames

A California state bill that would have more heavily regulated the use of flamethrowers has now effectively fizzled out in a legislative committee.

In light of this development, there's nothing to stop Boring Company customers in California from receiving the company's sold-out flamethrowers.

On May 26, the day after the bill died in committee, CEO Elon Musk tweeted:

About to ship. @BoringCompany holding flamethrower pickup parties in a week or so, then deliveries begin. Check https://t.co/WTl3TOTOkt for details.

      Anything that takes a standard propane attachment is 'high capacity' of course. There's no limit to the size of the tank you can hook up to a plain old $2.39 propane torch from the home despot.

      This is true. But the name and design does encourage destructive and dangerous acts. There is no legitimate use of EM's flamethrower, unlike a propane torch.

    While this seems like a completely stupid thing overall I did find Elons tweet interesting.

    ATF says any flamethrower with a flame shorter than 10 ft is A-ok. Our design is max fun for least danger. I’d be way more scared of a steak knife.

    So if the flame is shorter then 3 meters it is ok. Still I'm not sure if I find the idea in general very pleasing, something that shoots flames up to 3 meters away (it could be a lot less). Any data on tank capacity or if you can mix your own napalm and go crazy with it? Or will it be like a small propane canister making this nothing more then a really big lighter that you could possibly light some cigarettes with or mildly char one hotdog?

      Just a propane torch with a fancy gun like handle. I'm honestly more afraid of weed burners and roofing torches.

      This does not "throw" flames -- it creates a temporary jet of flame like any other propane burner out there. With some manipulation of the igniter and gas valves (release gas then ignite) you could also make a small fireball, but it will have a very short duration and forget about it if there's any wind. What distinguishes a flame thrower from this glorified $50 weed burner, is that a flamethrower uses a gelatinous fuel source that sticks to whatever it hits and continues to burn, something you can't do with propane whether or not the burner comes with a pistol grip.

    So, can anyone tell me how much violent crime has been committed with flamethrowers recently?

    Maybe some arsons, but the dirt cheap method of a bit of gasoline and a match or lighter seems to be a lot more popular than something that costs lots of money.

    I'm guessing this is more an example of pounding the table for vote getting or the precautionary principle gone stupid.

      Well, we know from the names of the SpaceX recovery barges that Elon is a fan of Iain Banks, so perhaps he's had a Culture "drug gland" fitted... although if he could make those they'd sell waaay better than flamethrowers...

      It's the same kind of childish humor in the line of:

      * SpaceX's Big Fucking Rocket
      * Tesla Models S, 3, X, and Y
      * The name: The Boring Company

      It also grabs attention for the Boring Company and given how simple the "flamethrowers" are, he probably made a profit from it.

        I'd go with "drunk frat boy" vs. "childish", although Boring Co is not bad. He had to call it something, and that humor involves actual wordplay. I'm beginning to suspect that the name "autopilot" is also one of his jokes.
