Russian trolls 'spreading discord' over vaccine safety online

Bots and Russian trolls spread misinformation about vaccines on Twitter to sow division and distribute malicious content before and during the American presidential election, according to a new study.

Scientists at George Washington University, in Washington DC, made the discovery while trying to improve social media communications for public health workers, researchers said. Instead, they found trolls and bots skewing online debate and upending consensus about vaccine safety.

The study discovered several accounts, now known to belong to the same Russian trolls who interfered in the US election, as well as marketing and malware bots, tweeting about vaccines.

Russian trolls played both sides, the researchers said, tweeting pro- and anti-vaccine content in a politically charged context. "These trolls seem to be using vaccination as a wedge issue, promoting discord in American society," Mark Dredze, a team member and professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins, which was also involved in the study, said. "By playing both sides, they erode public trust in vaccination, exposing us all to the risk of infectious diseases. Viruses don't respect national boundaries."

So this is what soylent is now. Trolling for comments.

I have a idea everyone here will like. Do not watch the news. Now before you roll your eyes and get pissed off or start snarking. Hear me out on my hypothesis. The news is designed to piss you off. These guys have perfected a skinner box. News is designed to piss you off. Most of the news wants you to be pissed off at 'the russians', hell it may even be justified. Well congratulations you are now angry. Now what? Some of the news is 'fake'. Some of it is 'real'. But it is 100% designed so you come back and get more. Is this how you want to live? Do you want to live by what someone you have never met tells you to think?

Why did identity politics become a big thing after about 2000?

For older generations it was drilled into our heads that people were all the same and labeling was evil. Now it seems to be a virtue. Was everyone just wrong about being equal and we should have spent efforts on establishing hierarchies such that we develop appropriate punishments and remediations (my fathers oppression is equivalent to 4 of your grandfathers and your oppressions)?

Both the RNC and DNC have been known to support kookery on the opposite side to debase their apponents. And frankly if this was done as a PAC, I've not seen any law that actually makes it a crime. It can't reasonably be a conflict with the emoluments clause, because if it were so, then any political advertisement on behalf of a multinational fiduciary interest would be a crime. And that would include all of the fortune 500.

Either all foreign sourced capital in U.S. politics is a crime, or all aren't. IMHO, all are. But if that is so, you'd have to arrest all of congress, and all of the respective CEO's of multinational conglomerates.

Troll A will monopolize the criticism of guy with a factually or logically incorrect post.
Troll B will counter A destroying him dialectically. Mob rule will take care of anybody coming to the help of A, accusing him of shifting the goalposts.

Guy is saved, and all the activity attracts further views.

Trolls at George Washington University, in Washington DC, made the discovery while trying to improve social media communications for public health workers, bots said. Instead, they found scientists and researchers skewing online debate and upending consensus about vaccine safety.

This is the exact same thing as the news. Just turn on your local "democrat" station, then turn on your local "republican" station. Its the exact same shit of trying to get people hyped up for a cause so their brains turn off and you can take advantage of them somehow.

Or just like right here in good 'ol SN, Trolls blaming all problems on the D's or sometimes the R's.

So, now we're trained against Russians. We have filled all arsenals again and it's needed to squish some bullets :). How bad...

I really wanted to speak about these vaccine-related problems. But every time I asked about exact details of manufacturing, which would entitle me to take opinion, I was literally barked with lawyer's mumbling about "intellectual property". If I see such thing in software, it's a 100% excuse for a backdoor. Probably this is why there are so many people who oppose vaccines, but this time American trolls vote for the most extreme and irrational arguments.
