I'm not sure if this is on topic but the other site used to cover anime quite extensively.

A new series of Sailor Moon is being released via hulu.com and neonalley.com in which the story of Sailor Moon is retold from the beginning. (This is colloquially known in the film industry as a "reboot" but such a term is probably irksome to geeks who find rebooting a computer to be tiresome.)

The series will be particularly popular with the demographic of women who watched previous incarnations of Sailor Moon and who are now in their late 20s. Laura Hudson writing for wired.com is presumably in this demographic and gives away a few spoilers despite promising not to. A trailer for the series reveals much less.

Doh, not that exciting if not in the hentai sub-genre (and the mention about the trailer being even less "revealing" doesn't sound encouraging).

It's also being streamed from crunchyroll.

dvance rumours were that it would follow the original manga very closely, so it wouldn't be as much a reboot as a representatin of the original story, which was primarily a romance; whereas the original anime introduces a lot of superhero filler because the manga wasn't being written fast enough for the production schedule.

I've seen the first episode, and it seems a lot like the original first episode. The animation is a bit better done, but I don't have the sense that the romance elements are much more emphasized than in the original anime.

Maybe that will change; it takes a while for romance to develop. Thre are differences in detail, which make the new first episode seem a little less stilted than the old one, though.

This reminds me of what they did with Full Metal Alchemist. I could be wrong having never read the manga, but my understanding is that the second series was much more true to the original story than the first. The artistic style was about the same, but there were changes to the story, some major and some minor. I think Brotherhood (the second one) felt a bit less geared toward a younger audience. The general feel I got was that they had changed the manga to appeal to a different audience for the first series and then decided they could do it better afterward, maybe it's the same with Sailor Moon.

Submissions like this are why Soylent News needs a "Soylent Reviews" catagory -- especially given SN's ambitions to become a bastion of independent journalism. The best way to encourage original content in this context is to invite people to write reviews of all things nerdy.

Although I like the headline's tagline -- "If you have to ask, this story is not for you." Which on a Saturday night could be interpreted to indicate a tacit plea to users to refrain from posting piggish comments about bukakke and tentacle rape which do not serve to advance the discussion.

My bad stuff is like a vaccine -- it hurts in the short-term but makes the community stronger in the long-term by encouraging the development of smarter countermeasures against common shitposters (coprodactylus vulgaris) as well as reinforcing common sense and persuading the readership to address the nut of the content rather than get bogged-down in petty distractions -- all while encouraging dissenting viewpoints.

Unless I'm drunk, in which case fuck you.

But getting back on topic -- Even American cartoons, like He-Man and She-Ra, used canned transformation sequences [youtube.com] to indicate that the climax was near. You knew that shit was about to go down. You can see the importance of the transformation sequence carry over to games, such as Final Fantasy X-2. [youtube.com]

these 'reboots' that have been going on lately have actually been a very good thing because the originals were always pretty terrible, and often included a ridiculous amount of filler.

a new hunter x hunter anime is currently running, fullmetal alchemist got a second anime that finished with the manga (called FMA: Brotherhood stateside), dragonball z got a remake up through the end of the cell saga without all the filler (dragonball kai has no more 20-episode stretches of "charging up" or running down snake way), and thats just what i can think of off the top of my head, and they're all way better than the original ones.

since the mangaka of sailor moon is the wife of tha mangaka of hunterxhunter and yuyu hakusho, i'm not ashamed to say i'll watch it.

i forgot to include that a new jojo's bizzare adventure anime is also currently running, about halfway through part 3, and should run through at least part 6, and hopefully sometime this year we'll finally get movie 4 of Rebuild of Evangelion :D

I once saw a young lady cosplaying Sailor Jupiter on the DeviantArt.com home page, and Goddess she looked good.

I may have to check this out to see what its all about.

Side note: Agree with other posts that SN needs a "Soylent Reviews" or "Misc stuff" catagory for items like this, even if they are fun to read about the site might be taken a bit more seriously if this sort of news wasn't on the main page.

Screw Moonlight Densetsu. As a German I wish there was more that rave song they used for the German Sailor Moon opening. That song was stupid but insanely catchy. (It's also easy to find on YouTube; try searching for "sailor moon german op" or "sailor moon deutsches intro".)

Seriously, this is one of the songs that defined childhood in 1990s Germany. Whether you liked Sailor Moon or not, you definitely knew this song and probably the lyrics too. It was that catchy. (Although the biggest win for German anime BGM was still when they replaced the entire Captain Future soundtrack with pure space funk awesomeness. Honestly; ask YouTube for "feinde greifen an", "hurra wir fliegen" or "vor dem start" and enjoy.)

Those first images are of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, aka the live-action series with amusingly low production values. I mean CGI that would've looked cheap fifteen years ago (excluding the monster in the first episode, which they apparently blew their entire budget on), obvious rubber suit monsters galore and of course the fact that Luna (a cat and one of the more important supporting characters) is played by a plush toy.

To my knowledge the Pretty Guardian bit, while a translated part of the Japanese titles, is usually used to refer to the live-action series in the West; the animated ones I usually see referred to simply as Sailor Moon (|R|S|SuperS|Crystal).

...Here I go, sounding like a Sailor Moon expert despite having watched mainly the original series and a few episodes of PGSM - and the hilarious "Saban Moon" trailer, of course. I'm more of a Precure man, myself. (For that matter I'll have to continue watching Happiness Charge Precure. The opening episode was intriguing but I haven't followed up on it yet.)
