As much as I hate agreeing with an AC... although come on, SN is way nerdier than /.'s "news for iFans, stuff that blings". What does Apple and Nerds have in common? Aside from Woz, nothing. Nerds don't buy cool tech, we design, build, program, repair, and repurpose it.

A huge number of nerds own iDevices, and have since long before it was trendy to do so. Other nerds jumped on the iDevices bandwagon during the gold-rush era of the app-store. The original appeal of Apple devices was that it was different from what you used at work: "think different" was a successful ad campaign for a reason. Now that the hardware is popular we are expected to give it up as not different enough? What are we, hipsters?

I develop for iDevices and used a MacBook for years until it met an unfortunate and untimely end. The fact that I feel the need to post anonymously is disheartening. I would love to see stories about the interesting things that are happening in the Apple sphere of technology without the warfare regarding personal preference shifting the discussion.

I don't think it's just "Now that the hardware is popular." The Apple ][ machine was intended for very different usage than the latest Air is. If

Sure, I'd like to know if Apple does something interesting, such as a significant reworking of Darwin or switching architectures again, etc. But I'm not so interested in the "Apple has released their 20XX line of laptops" or "Rumor says Apple will add three new colors to their phone lineup". I don't care about those stories when HP or Samsung are the companies in question, and I don't care about them when Apple is the company in question. And unfortunately, most "Apple news" is of that uninteresting sort.

I have a Newton, as well as hardware only powerful enough that it runs CP/M-80.

But it's my soldering iron, and the fact that I own more than three wire strippers that makes me self-identify as a nerd. Also that I know what TTL stands for.

i like that. geeks here need to rank according to the types of wire strippers they have.

30 gauge strippers, you're a digital geek, and you only care about having enough voltage for a logic 1.
12 gauge strippers, you're a power person, and you worry about power supply current handling.
coax stripper, you're a ham radio geek, and you know what RF is.

if you don't have wire strippers, well then you're just a code geek, which i wouldn't trust with a hot iron on any day of the week.

don't know what a wire stripper is...... get off this site.

              10-18 GA for electrical work.
              16-22 GA for electronics.
18-24 GA specialty blades for Teflon/etc.

        > Nerds don't buy cool tech, we design, build,
        > program, repair, and repurpose it.

Also, we use it. There's a time for Erector sets and Altairs, and there's a time for having a high-defenition video camera that shoots at 120fps and also shoots 8MP stills at 10fps and oh yeah it's also a GPS with satellite imagery and live traffic and a million other things and it weighs a couple OUNCES. Doesn't matter if it's Apple or Android or whoever. I mean come on, if this [consumerist.com] isn't nerd heaven, I don't know what is.

I liked the idea of smartphones back when they were expensive and sucked*; then Apple made a great one and I wanted it. As it happens, a few million other people did too. Being popular does not automatically make it bad.

        * and I wanted one even before they existed. When I got my first Palm, I thought "this thing is awesome!" Then, the first time I read a number off my Palm and punched it into my phone, I though "It'll be great when I don't have to read a number off of one device and punch it into another." I very distinctly remember having that thought.

Yes, nerds do indeed use tech, and we often foresee tech before it gets here. But using tech isn't enough for one to be a nerd, you have to understand it intimately. A nerd understands how that cool phone works, a consumer doesn't.

I disagree that Apple and nerds have nothing in common.

At my work, a large percentage of developers have a MacBook Pro or MacBook air, simply because they feel that it's the best hardware for their needs (they'll usually have another OS installed on it - in fact the head of our Microsoft partnership group has a MacBook with Win8).

Apple's OS upgrades often come with shiny new tech that contributes back to the Open Source community as well:
        http://www.apple.com/opensource/ [apple.com]

I agree that we don't need a bunch of articles about that time His Steveness dropped a wrapper on the sidewalk in 1985, but Apple stories can be a very interesting sign of where technology is headed.
