It is thanks to a special, durable coating that should last throughout intercourse, says the team, backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
They hope it will make condoms more appealing to use and thereby prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as well as unwanted pregnancies.
Without enough lubrication, sex can be painful and condoms may split or slip.
When used correctly, condoms are a highly effective contraceptive, but not everyone likes them.
They are often already lubricated to make them easier to use, but sometimes this might not be enough for comfort.
People can add lubricant, but this can be messy and may need several applications, interrupting sex.
Researchers say the self-lubricating condom, which becomes really slippery once it comes into contact with body fluid, should get round this.
It could withstand intercourse involving at least 1,000 thrusts without losing its slipperiness, the Royal Society Open Science journal reports.

So, it says an average sex act is 600 thrusts and 1000 is the best a condom can withstand. Assuming 2 thrusts per second, an average one would be 5 min and nothing would hold above 10. I was under impression that most of the Internet guys can easily do 30 minutes and an hour or two occasionally. How do they do it, I wonder, change equipment? Nothing like this is ever mentioned or shown on video.

The 1,000 thrusts is about this condom. It doesn't say that the condom breaks after 1,000 thrusts, just that it loses its slipperiness. It doesn't say how long a normal condom can last.

How did you arrive at that number? You don't even need a penis, vagina, or a partner to disprove it. Find something to hold onto, start a timer and thrust your hips, 2 thrusts per second, and sustain that for five minutes.

Obviously not thrusting the whole time, but lubrication really is a problem for sessions lasting more than 15 minutes. I've had a couple girlfriends who despite enjoying sex longer can only stay lubricated for about 15 minutes without additional lubrication, although they can continue orgasming after that point if lubrication is used.
Based on the fact that most guys don't last longer than 5 minutes, require more than 15 minutes to recover, and how often most women want to fuck in a row, it seems like a biologically sound length for strictly reproductive purposes. From a pleasure seeking perspective it tends to be far below the required length of time.
