from the alcoholic-mouthwash dept.

An elderly friend died last year and among other things I inherited a couple of bottles of Creme de Menthe. For anyone unfamiliar, it's bright green and very minty -- 60 proof / 30% alcohol by volume. I'm not a regular drinker, and I am one of those weirdos that believes in waste-not, want-not, so I felt obligated to find a way to (slowly) consume it. My eventual choice was to pour a shot or two over a bowl of chocolate ice cream -- not bad, compare to mint chocolate-chip ice cream, with a little kick.

Any other suggestions?

Now I want to know what's a good Creme de Menthe brand. Probably not this one [davidsonsliquors.com].

It's a bait-and-switch for editors. You hook them on with horrible submissions and when the poor saps starts complaining you reel them in with "if you think you can do a better job at it be my guest".

The cake is a lie, as is the Creme d' Methe. I have tried that "submit better stories" routine. It does not work. Ends up being all takyon subs, anyway, or proxy takyon subs, like this one. Now what I hear is that all the young people today are in to absorbing things, um, rectally. [theguardian.com] Learned about it from Gitmo. So, at least you would have minty-fresh flatulence.

Generally speaking, yes. Our standard preference for tech/science/whatnot is applied much less strenuously to Ask Soylent submissions though. That's a personal observation not me speaking on policy. I don't know that we have a policy on AS subs at all.

Why are aristarchus submissions rejected? You may well ask. Half a dozen met their unmaker just today, and fine submissions they were. We mourn. Of course, as janrinok was wont to say, they belonged in a journal, not on the front page, like this pile of vomit that smells of mint.

(for our soylentil, a suggestion. Chug the entire bottle. You have never heard of anyone dying of Creme d'Menthe poisoning, have you? Of course, that might just be because it was too embarrassing to be reported publically. On second thought, the "Hot Chocolate" solution may be preferable.)

Hiram Walker is a quality bar brand. they suggest this :

                  1 part Vodka

"pile of vomit that smells of mint."

I had a girlfriend once who took a bottle of Goldschlager to a Halloween party. Nobody else could stomach more than a joke shot of the stuff, so she wound up drinking most of the bottle herself. She spent most of the night projectile vomiting sparkly gold-flecked spew all over the bathroom. It was oddly beautiful, in a Jackson Pollock kind of way.

I'm all for it, but I was wondering if maybe there was some deep connection to normal topics that I was unaware of. Such as:

Perhaps Creme de Menthe has become preferred drink of programmers everywhere, but nobody is openly admitting it so sub had to ask somewhere?

Maybe somebody developed a new car engine that is powered by a Creme de Menthe based solution, and as a result the exhaust is minty fresh?

What if it was discovered that Creme de Menthe was a super powered aphrodisiac for some endangered animal?

Or maybe all of the above, and so the sub is trying to determine which would be best?

Essentially I was hoping for something that would make it less mundane for me :D

Maybe you could run a comparative study between yeti poo that uses Creme de Menthe vs. Peppermint Schnapps. Study participants can easily be recruited at a nearby freshman dorm (or grocery store parking lot on Friday nights, if you don't have a college nearby.) Chart the results across various axes like "induces regurgitation" or "accidental catatonia." It would probably be the definitive work on the matter that you could shop around for a research grant.

See? Just takes a little imagination. ;-)
