Aladdin. The name conjures up images of a quick thief in the streets, an Arabian city from centuries ago, an evil vizier, and a large terrifying blue genie. Some things just don't translate well from the cartoon version to a live film with actual people on the silver screen. It turns out that the genie from Aladdin is one of them. With comments on social media describing 'Will Smith as Genie is straight nightmare fuel' (sic) director Guy Ritchie may have to work some magic of his own to get this whole new world off the ground and into cinemas.
I would like to know if he is cosplaying as a smurf or something from Avatar.

He died for me when he tried to reboot 'Karate Kid' with his son in the 'Daniel San' role. Jackie Chan died a little for me at the same time.
Fails:
1) Basically the same story, but Kung Fu instead of Karate, but they called it Karate Kid anyway. (Probably not Jackie's fault since in China it's called 'The Kung Fu Dream').
2) Changed things and/or copied things in the story for no good reason, as per the following items in this shit list
3) 'wax on wax off' turns into 'jacket on jacket off'. The wax thing was about unknowingly working towards actual skills while doing something worthwhile in both senses of the activity. Jacket on jacket off is 'wtf?'
4) Jackie's character's tragedy: "wife and kid dies when hit by drunk driver". Miyagi: "wife and child die during childbirth in the Manzanar internment camp". Every day random tragedy, versus a personal tragedy within a historically significant incident of national shame.
5) A 10 year old kid with a bit of puppy love, versus a coming of age story of a sexually mature teenager finding love.
6) A scene with a fully grown adult besting a bunch of 10 year old kids, versus a tiny old man besting a bunch of muscled young adults most of which were twice his size.
7) If Wil Smith had waited for another 6 or 7 years until his son was old enough to pull off a decent version of the proverbial 'coming of age' story it could have been so much better.
8) Alternatively, it could have been so much better if they didn't call it the same thing, and got rid of the obvious copy cat elements, and went with a story that made sense for a bunch of 10 year old kids. But, no, they had to try and cash in on the original movie's popularity, but were hamstrung with the forced casting of a 10 year old kid in the lead role.
So much more, but I'll stop there. People that had never seen the original probably wouldn't mind so much. But, when you've seen the original, this remake seems like a slap in the face and a swift kick to the crotch.
