Inkstone News:

Federal officials have labeled Boston a major target of Chinese spies who are looking to steal trade and technology secrets from the US.

US Assistant Attorney General John Demers, who leads a federal force against Chinese espionage in America, said Massachusetts had become a focus of his team's work, the Associated Press reported.
...
Massachusetts is home to top-ranked universities including Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It also hosts military contractors such as weapon maker Raytheon and defense system provider Mercury Systems.

As part of the China Initiative, officials said they had met with local companies and colleges last week to encourage them to bring suspected instances of espionage to the attention of federal investigators.

Lelling said the large number of Chinese nationals living in Boston also made the city a potential espionage target, but officials added that most were in the US for legitimate reasons, such as study.

All the livestock is gone, and the barn is half rotted, ready to fall down in the next major storm. Industrial espionage? Well, yeah, but it was an inside job. Thanks Kissinger, Clinton, Romney, and a host of others who happily sold our tech to China. So, now, they're sending a few ghouls to pick over the bones? I can't get terribly excited over that.

In the old days, selling your country's secrets meant delivering paper or microfilm to an agent via some method.

Now you just let the buyer's agents into the country through your free and open borders and they take whatever they want. A spy buffet if you will.

Or if they want it wholesale, just set up a computer in an unused bathroom at home, and route all your government work through it. Then the buyers will use the passwords you provide them hack into it.

Pssst... you know? That has nothing to do with your inability to get terribly excited, you'll have to search for other causes.

If they made a profit then they considered it morally right, and of course they were happy about it.

I remember hearing a saying as a child, purportedly from the Soviet Union, that Americans would sell the rope that would be used to hang them the next morning, as long as they made a profit.

That saying has made the rounds over the years. I can't say, exactly, how old I was when I heard it, but we often say the same about people we know.
