SoylentNews is people

from the "Long-Pig" dept.

A Swedish behavioral scientist has suggested that it may be necessary to turn to cannibalism and start eating humans in order to save the planet.

Appearing on Swedish television to talk about an event based around the "food of the future," Magnus Söderlund said he would be holding seminars on the necessity of consuming human flesh in order to stop climate change.

Environmentalists blame the meat and farming industry for a large part of what they claim is the warming of the earth.

According to Söderlund, a potential fix would be the Soylent Green-solution of eating dead bodies instead.

[Ed note: At first I was going to give this story a pass and then, well... this site is called SoylentNews said name being tangentially related to Soylent Green and the tag line is: "SoylentNews is people", so it only goes to follow that you are what you eat, right? Feel free to comment seriously, but I'm quite frankly more interested in what kind of fun the community can have with this story! Some jokes just write themselves. --martyb]

What an absurd idea - humans are too far up the food chain [wikipedia.org] - not to mention incredibly resource-intensive. The environmental cost of nappies [diapers] alone is horrendous - and that only gets us to age two or three. Then there is a further twenty or so years before we have a nice meaty specimen ready for table.

If we really want to save the planet, we should all adopt a vegetarian diet. Or better yet - stop having children: The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement [vhemt.org].

Well if we want to give the idea some consideration, that's not the way to look at it. Humans wouldn't be made into cattle, their corpses would be repurposed after the live their life meaningful or not.
The real challenge is more that a lot of the meat will be unfit for consumption. Old people, people with diseases and mangled corpses due to death with trauma.
If we consider how the average corpse is handled, even skipping the thanatopractor's work, it's gotta wait around a bit so an official can confirm the death for official reasons, and people who die violent deaths usually have their open wound sitting around on the accident site for a while. All a far cry from good food safety practices.
Basically the only eligible meat would be euthanasia subjects and people dying in the hospital from organ failure not due to infection.
And after that there's not much meat you can safely harvest for human consumption. All offall's off limits due to prion. It'd be easier to make the corpse into granulated cattle feed, but then we have the exact same problem as cattle based feed and that's not effective either if you want to cook it hot enough to prevent prion disease.
So what's left? We can maybe improve on cremation as a funeral rite without trying to salvage meat, it's pretty energy intensive. But officials are pretty touchy about rites that don't involve a sealed coffin or destruction of the body for public health reasons. And if you have to drive too far away to bury the corpse into the earth, the fuel cost might be worse than the ovens.

Just to fix a few errors in the article and which this segment is based on.

    (1) Magnus Söderlund is a professor in Economics, focusing on consumer behaviour. I guess he could technically then be a behavioral scientist but I think he see himself as an economist.

    (2) The segment was not on Swedish television (SVT) but on TV4 (channel 4). I guess it could be "swedish television" like they somehow only have one television channel in the entire country, which they don't. You can probably watch the clip here, if you understand swedish and it's not geotagged or something.

(3-4) Here is the GastroNord summit page. It's quite odd when you look at the english version vs the swedish version. The english one just looks like it's some kind of cooking summit to show the latest and greatest in kitchen appliances.

But if you look at the swedish version you can read that it's about the food of the future: worms, grasshoppers or human-meat? (Framtidens mat: Maskar, gräshoppor eller människokött?). I guess they didn't plan on this to go global. Which might be silly considering that they had a professor on that suggested that perhaps we should eat people (... to save the environment). That said Söderlund did conclude that he doesn't think that it's actually going to happen. The taboo of eating humans, even for the environment, is just to great. Not to mention that there are, currently, many laws that prohibit the processing and consumption of human flesh.

    (5) It all remindedme of the quote from the first Judge Dredd movie, "eat recycled food, it's good for the environment and okay for you ..."

That said there probably has to be a lot of processing cause we might not taste super good. If I recall correctly it's been mention that we taste like salty pork. So I guess jews and muslims and other people that don't like pork are just not going to eat humans, even to save the planet.

What would a kilogram of human meat go for? If any weight of food is based on the cost of raising it to eating age then the cost of human meat is going to be astronomical. Even if we somehow just decided to eat babies that is still quite expensive. A human that died of old age would have an enormous cost associated with it that could quite probably not be recovered by selling it off for flesh. Not to mention that a lot of people die from disease and might not be safe for consumption. As a cattle/chicken substitute we are just not going to work even if it's a staple idea from various vampire horror movies to have some kind of "human farm" (or processing plant) for blood (see the last season of 'The Strain'). But it appears somewhat wasteful.

Question might be why we cannibalize otherwise and it would appear that it's more about rituals and trying attain power (or souls) or connect with the dead people much more so then to gain nourishment as a food source. The people that eat people for food only appear to be some kind of exception.

Funny how these people who come up with "Save The Planet" ideas never know what actually is going on. For example, we are in no danger of being swarmed by billions of Swedes. The Swedish part of the overpopulation problem has been solved. We don't need to eat Swedes to Save The Planet. Who knew, right?

Perhaps it's time to look at what Sweden is doing right rather than come up with modest silly ideas to rationalize slightly less silly ideas? Of course, we could instead Save The Planet by making things worse. I'm sure that'll work.

Swedes have been obsessed with the "McDonalds effect" and cattle farms consuming the Amazon since at least the 1980s, probably long before that. A Swedish green sold me an Amazon styled postcard in 1989 at a nowhere train station, and couldn't stop ranting about how American culture was destroying the rain forests...

Young grass does not support the same biodiversity or carbon capture as old growth tropical hardwoods.

Tree cover is increasing in Florida, too... but that doesn't change the fact that 90%+ of the old growth was cut, used, and replaced with frankly poor substitutes. Yes, Frankly, as in the Oscar Meyer ranches, among others.

We bought some land that was cut in the 1800s, to float logs down the river to a sawmill that built a little town - which burned within 20 years after it was built. Given 100+ years to regrow, it's starting to be a decent wildlife habitat again, too bad that the neighbors have all been incentivized (by tax breaks) to clear their forest and make way for a few farce-cattle on their land, farce because they get more in tax breaks than they could ever make from the cows - cows that they generally lose money on.

So apparently a reporter, Greg Foot, from the BBC (BBC Earth Lab) tried eating his own flesh a couple of years ago, he had them extract a couple of small pieces of muscle from his leg. Apparently it was like "beer and ale stew" in taste and smell, which might possibly say more about his diet or something.
