If they were candidates, they would completely divest themselves of all party affiliation, and run as candidates for President.
And instead of wasting their time trying to convince democrat and republican voters to change their votes or anything, they have to chase after the 120-150 million people that don't vote. Both are already popular amongst the disenfranchised, just ignore the republicans and democrats. They're outnumbered! Put that on the bumper sticker and there's a chance. Won't hurt to do Monty Python sketches on the impeachment theater and show pictures of the Chinese military build up either. (Whoops! There goes Korea)
A Bernie/Tulsi ticket is a perfectly acceptable compromise. We have a nice healthy VP for insurance, ready to take command when he kicks... The numbers are there if people take their own initiative to put them on the ballot, and just show up and vote. Nobody has to say anything to the press or anything.. Mum's the word until Voting Day. No ads are necessary. Instead of making speeches and begging for money, the candidates will answer questions when they travel around. If everybody takes their own initiative, the effort is completely trivial, and instantaneous, kinda, there are forms to fill out. But if everybody gets up off the Group W bench and sings just one time, in three part harmony... Ya gotta sing loud

For that to work all the swing voters would have to abandon Trump. And I can't see that happening. Not all of them. A lot of them are actually pretty happy with him. Incumbent advantage.
"I feel more secure with Tulsi as VP."
I would feel much more secure with her as President.
And frankly I think the ticket would pull more votes with her at the head of the ticket.
A lot of hardcore Democrat supporters want to see the first female President, and are ultimately going to reject Bernie because he's just a rich old white male.
They may not like Gabbard, no they really hate her actually. But here's the thing. Come down to November, if it's her versus Trump they're still going to have to go vote for her. It'll be painful, but not too embarrassing. The next day all they'll be able to talk about is the first Woman President! And a WoC to boot! Isn't it wonderful?
She can keep the Democrats together. I'm not at all convinced Sanders can do the same.
On the other side, she can cross the aisle a lot more effectively. She can talk to veterans and blue collar voters and peace voters and a lot of different groups that the Democrats have ignored for so long that they are no longer reliably Democrats; again, I have a hard time seeing Sanders doing the same job half as effectively.

We don't need "swing" voters. Let them play their games by themselves. We need the non-voters, we have the numbers, even if we are at the mercy of their open minds. It's bound to be more open than any republican's or democrat's stink of team spirit.

Trouble is, the nonvoters are often nonvoters for reasons that are hard to overcome.
a) "I don't like any of the candidates because they're all politicians and they're all scum."
"Ours aren't! They're fresh and new!"
"Yeah, that's what they all say. Scum."
b) "I don't understand it and it's a lot of work and brainspace and I care a lot more about myjob/mykids/myfortnites. Why stand in line to vote when I could be doing myjob/mykids/myfortnites?"
"But these guys will change everything!"
"I don't feel like thinking about that, when I could be thinking about myjob/mykids/myfortnites."
c) "I'm a niche type with niche politics inadequately represented by anyone's platform, and I refuse to compromise my principles."
"You're gonna love these platforms!"
"Oh look, something with which I disagree. Talk to the hand."
d) "Voting doesn't change anything. If it could, it'd be illegal. It's all a scam by The Man. Even if a different party gets it, it's all sewn up by the Men In Suits. There's really no point. It just puts you on another list."
"But this vote will be different! It will count!"
"That's what they all say. You're just a tool fo the establishment. Go away."
Seriously, do you really think that all these people are just waiting for their politician in shining policy documents to come and rescue them? Do you genuinely think that their giveashitmobile can make it across the desert of ignorance, or over the mountains of apathy? This has nothing to do with Tulsi, or Bernie, or freaking zombie Trotsky; it's about the nature of the nonvoting public. And even if you could get them off the couch for long enough to scrawl a cross in a box, do you really think that you could find a candidacy to unify them? These are not, broadly speaking, a well-informed group, nor policy motivated. How many of them would just look at Trump, shrug and say: "Enh, he's done OK. Better the devil I know." rather than come up with a policy analysis that you like?
And even beyond this, how many states could you really flip this way? Given how massively partisan the map is turning, do you genuinely think that you could push California out of the arms of the DNC? Or NY? How about the rest of the west coast? Do you think you could turn the midwest purple?
Sorry, I often find your stuff thought-provoking, but this one is way wide of the mark.

Bernie is, despite claiming to be a Democratic Socialist, actually a social democrat. You know, like Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, where they are still capitalist countries, but maintain decent social safety nets. Having a single payer healthcare system - which would actually be cheaper than our current price-gouging rapacious privatized system according to every study done on the matter - paid for by tax dollars wouldn't transform the US into Venezuela anymore than paying for the military, police, fire departments, etc. using tax dollars have. It's the same for his other policies, most of which you probably don't know about or understand because you simply don't actually care about policy specifics.
