    You could live on a nice planet somewhere. Like Minbar, where everything is peaceful, plentiful, and there could be no possible conflict or differing opinions.

    Oh, great, so now I'm likely to be murdered by Centauri, Shadows, or Vorlons as part of some intergalactic war I had nothing to do with really, or driven from my home and killed walking to the next city by the Minbari warrior caste in a civil war.

    In general, I think the question assumes that the future will be better than the present, when a lot of good sci-fi does not make that assumption.
