Conspicuous Conservation, the ostentatious display of objects that mark a person as eco-friendly, has become popular over the recent decade, with example of wealthy people making a point of being seen driving a Prius, putting solar panes in silly places and even wearing shoes "suggesting" you worked on the BP oil spill cleanup.

On the opposite side of the coin we are starting to see some rather deplorable examples of Conspicuous Pollution, the most flagrant of which is called "Rollin Coal".

These kids, (they are almost always 20 something rural guys) will spend anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 modifying their pickups for the sole purpose of belching huge clouds of black exhaust; adding smoke stacks and smoke switches (which either trick the engine into thinking it needs more fuel, or dump diesel fuel directly into the exhaust manifold).

This is not just a handful of guys. Elizabeth Kulze posted an article with links to “an entire subculture” on Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram. “It’s just fun,” one coal roller says. “Just driving and blowing smoke and having a good time.”

Have a reporting mechanism that Joe Average can use.
California has a limp version of this. [google.com]

A cop can impound a vehicle on the spot.
Once impounded, inspect the vehicles for illegal modifications.
Fine the living shit out of the owner for any violations.
Have a mechanic's bay within the impound lot where the owner can hire in a mobile mechanic to come and remove the modifications.
Require that the vehicle pass all regulations before it can be released.

The behavior problem goes away quickly when access to the violating vehicle is removed and the costs start mounting up.

Not sure why this makes a tech news site, but hey, there's still some more work to do on the Soylent news queue. gewg above me has got it right - there's no reason for this to happen, and wouldn't happen in a place where the law is something to be feared. There's no reason respectful citizens should have to put up with this shit. If the vehicle is violating code, impound that shit and make it expensive to get back. You had the money to install this bullshit, you should have the money to uninstall it and pay a fine that goes to clean up.

Yet another reason why people in dictatorships behave differently. Dictators don't have to put up with bullshit. And they don't [dictatorshandbook.net].

This class of people are losers and they KNOW it.

    *

They desperately want attention and they don't really care how
they get that attention. Thus, their cretinism can manifest itself
in the form of loud cars and trucks, 4WD vehicles which have enormous
tires, or diesels which over fuel to such an extent that the exhaust belches
great clouds of black smoke, as described in the summary.

    *

We used to have huge wars which would rid the earth of large numbers of
this human waste. That doesn't seem to be an option any more. So probably
a pandemic of something like Ebola in which drugs are withheld from vast portions
of the underclasses will be necessary at some point. Weak-minded people will be horrified
at what I have written here, but realists will understand the human race needs to be cleaned
up from time to time, and the cleaning is overdue.

Whites are the cause of all the world's problems and all, but all races can be equally obnoxious. Around here Mexicans and Asians install fart-pipes on their cars and rev their engines constantly for no good reason. Blacks like to bump bass-heavy music with their car stereos, often without properly Dynamatting their trunks, so not only does the bass bump but their entire car rattles.

And speaking of Conspicuous Conservation, the Prius was mentioned specifically. Priuses, like BMWs and Audis, are one of those cars that scream, "My driver is a douchebag!" Only the most obnoxious stereotypes of Whites, not the White Trash but the hypocrite phoney-altrust Yuppies, drive Priuses.

I thought people with fancy cars driving like idiots was entirely on topic. In the case of premium car owners, I encounter unwarranted entitlement, like they think they bought a premium ticket at a theme park. I'm not alone in this thinking. Ignoring the fanboys and backronyms, a definition on the UrbanDictionary from Mon 12 Jul 2010 defines BMW as:-

The ultimate driving machine. Yes it is. But, it is also the ultimate douchebag machine too. It really is a shame that over priced vehicles and other materialistic objects promote: egotistical behavior, arrogance, insecurity, personality defiencies, attitude deformities, rage, road rage, self esteem issues and immaturity. When I see a BMW (this also pertains to drivers of; Mercedes, Audi, Range Rover, Hummer, Porsche...ect.) 8 out of 10 times the driver is tailgating, doubling the speed limit, promoting neglectant and agressive driving, weaving in and out of traffic and endangering drivers around them. Seriously? Grow up. Who do you think you are? Get real. You fuck heads are not above the law because of the fact that your driving a vehicle in which the price is slightly higher then the average consumer can afford. Do you really think you have the right to park in a fire lane, handicapped spot or promote behavior defiencies because the car you drive is considered a status symbol? Should we blame the coked out celebrities (have fun in jail Lohan, your not invincible after all), the useless pathetic overrated rappers, the athletes or the legitimate, well educated CEO's of the world. Which ever way it is, money does equal power. This I agree on...

Although the example usage on the UrbanDictionary typical diverges from topic, particularly vitriolic examples come from the same person's experience:-

"I'm going 80 mph in the fast lane and I have a douchebag in a BMW riding my ass. Typical. Lay off the coke, get off of your Iphone and ditch your fucking sunglasses since its midnight you fucking queer ass!"

"Hmm....that girl is so hot. Oh wait, nevermind. She just put on her whoreish hollywood sunglasses (which makes her look like a fucking alien), she has fake tits and she just got into her used 2002 BMW 7 series

(which has 100k on it and sold for 25k...you fake fuckin bitch). Which makes her an insecure, egotistical trendwhore. I would rather stick my dick in Miles Davis's ass and cum in his ears, then have anything to do with that useless whore."

The general tone and language of this definition is compatible with the demeanor of Ethanol-fueled [soylentnews.org]. In particular [soylentnews.org]:-

Priuses, like BMWs and Audis, are one of those cars that scream, "My driver is a douchebag!"

Being an owner of a BMW I can safely tell you some of what you say is true. It however is not the BMW that does it. I see this happen many times to people who had little to no money suddenly get it. They equate wealth with that they are better. What you are describing is an entitlement attitude. Having a BMW just means you have the money to buy one. The being a dick was already there you just didnt have the money to do it. I have seen soccer moms loose their cool over a hamburger that had onions on it and their snowflake 'cant have onions'. The funniest one I saw was some lady who screamed out 'dont you know who my husband IS'.

HOWEVER, my previous car was a chevy. Once I got the BMW I noticed something *very* odd. Everyone around me drove much more aggressively. As in 'are you aiming for my car or something?' I am constantly challenged. People constantly ride my ass. People constantly cut me off. People get to the light and rev their engine like they want to prove that some 70s 440 charger can smoke the tires off a BMW. *every day* *multiple time a day* When I rent other cars this attitude 'goes away'.

Priuses, like BMWs and Audis, are one of those cars that scream, "My driver is a douchebag!"
You know what makes for a good up and coming 'douchbag'. Someone who makes sweeping generalizations about everyone to make themselves feel superior to someone else.

My BMW took me 10 years to buy and I have had it for 10. It really is a better car for day to day use. I have drove just about every other kind of car out there. Most cars made in the US are cheaply made (3 chevys, 4 fords experience talking here, 2 toyotas). They put this crazy awesome engine with a decent drivetrain then shelack a layer of plastic on it that breaks in 3-4 years (usually just out of warranty).

Unfortunately it costs a fortune. On top of that I have to deal with dickheads like you who have something to prove. Unfortunately that 'something to prove' is jealousy. I earned my car. Please keep your sweeping generalizations to yourself.

I've been considering purchasing a low-miles used BMW (a 2010 335D) and if I do, plan is to debadge it so there are no visible logos and then swap out the famous "kidney grill" for one that is matte black except for a small piece of chrome that goes around both kidneys, the effect being to make it not obviously a BMW. I might even put a honda or volkswagon badge on it just to help preserve the illusion. When you get down to it, sedans of all brands are pretty generic. Debadging won't fool a fan, but those guys are unlikely to have a grudge at BMW drivers. For everyone else, it ought to blend into the background as just another unremarkable 4-door car.

Anyway, my 1986 Chevy Sprint (made by Suzuki, 1 liter 3 cylinder) was a lot of fun. In this case fun came from being able to drive flat out much of the time -- can't do that with a typically overpowered car. It also had a lovely manual rack & pinion steering system, precision and feedback that haven't been matched by any power assisted steering that I've tried.

Those were the days of the national 55 mph limit, so the Sprint was plenty fast for the freeways. I even got a "waste of a resource" ticket for 65 mph from a Nevada state trooper -- a $2.00 "not a speeding ticket" -- while getting ~40 miles/gallon. THAT shitbox?...

            "You make your own action"[*]

Once I got past teenage hormones, I figured out that it is much more fun driving flat out (in a slow car) than in a powerful car at a fraction of its potential. It's not about the absolute limits of the car (don't believe the car magazine editors), it's about how much of the limits you can explore every day, on every corner in the subdivision or industrial park. Besides, the Sprint controls were really sensitive and lovely, especially the steering -- only matched in precision by the manual steering version of the NSX (Zanardi edition) and a couple of lightweight Lotus' (Loti?) with manual racks. No on-center dead zone (torsion bar windup) and no force/velocity limits that are part of every hydraulic assisted steering rack. If you've never paid attention while steering through a good (low backlash, low friction) manual rack, you don't know what you are missing.

Going back some decades, original VW Beetles and Fiat 500s were fun for the same reasons.

I've driven some of the cars you mention and they are completely frustrating to drive on the street for more than a few minutes (unless you are prepared to lose your license...aka the end of fun). The limits are much too high for mixing with "civilian" traffic. On a track is another thing all together, but how often do you get to do that?

I will admit... An econobox that's light weight, low to the ground, and has minimal soundproofing, sure makes you FEEL like you're driving twice as fast.

Beyond that... I suppose some people just always like having a challenge. And there's little sadder than a nice, shiny, expensive new sports car, just stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

      This is from the article:

In order to have an edge, drivers started modifying their trucks to dump excessive fuel into the motor, which gave them more horsepower, torque, speed and a better chance of winning.

And it makes no sense. If you have the correct air/fuel ratio, then all the fuel and all the oxygen is getting consumed. The amount of oxygen limits the amount of fuel you can burn. If you're running rich (excess fuel) you don't get more power, you just get incompletely-burned fuel (black smoke). This is elementary stuff.

More likely explanation of how this stupid trend started: some dumb-ass had a shitty truck that was blowing black smoke, and all his dumb-ass buddies thought it looked awesome.

One of the simplest fixes is to make the oxygen sensor always show an excess of oxygen. (Literately a couple bucks to install). You'll continue get most of the horsepower your motor was capable of, but not much more unless you have a turbocharger. You still need to bypass the factory exhaust system with a temporary (or permanent) route to your big stacks because that much smoke will mess up your exhaust system very quickly.

More complex, and less damaging to the engine is exhaust manifold injection, mixed with a small quantity of air, and an exhaust system bypass valve. This version does not hurt horsepower output.

The problem with ecologically friendly autos is that they’re directly marketed to hippies, who are generally more likely to be smug assholes who drive five under the speed limit just so others will notice they’re being green.

If they truly wanted hybrids and electrics to go mainstream they need to cut out the dumb tree power indicators and other such crap, and make the vehicle look utilitarian. Make a nice electric truck with duals in the back and some heavy lead acid batteries so you can tow and brake with it. Market it to farmers. Unlike what most people think farmers are rich. The average combine/tractor costs millions. It wouldn’t bother them to spend a good 100k on a truck that could pretty much tow anything since electric has so much torque. Once you get into that market, the rednecks will follow.

Hell, make a nice diesel-electric tractor.

Farmers are not really rich in the sense of the word you're using. Often their land will be worth many millions. And, indeed, the revenues from their farm may be HUGE. But they also have huge costs, and their bottom line tends to be small.

Agreed, Farmers, At least where I'm from, aren't that different from people buying houses. They aren't super rich, but justify spending a lot of money on a tractor with a bunch of bells and whistles, because it's for work, and drive themselves into huge debts. Like people buying super expensive McMansions they can't afford.

The farmer that owned the land behind my in-laws place had a tractor that he'd drive around the field once then he'd kick back and the tractor, literally, did the rest of the work for him. It was basically a giant self-driving lawnmower [wikipedia.org] he'd use two days in a row twice a year. Unfortunately it cost him his land. I guess he didn't realize when you borrow money from the bank, and use your land as collateral, and then can't pay them, because all you're doing is cutting fricken hay, the bank comes and takes your land away and sells it to someone else.

I would get a diesel-electric truck in a hot minute. Or even stirling-electric.

The truck is then my genset wherever I go on the land. Need to drill a hole? Plug in the drill. Need a spotlight where I'm helping birth animals? Click. Radio? Click. Laptop running down? Click. Circular saw? Click.

Add to that huge torque from dead rest with integrated traction control at every wheel, ability to crawl all day without getting sulky, idle at 0MPG ... folks, this is very close to truck heaven in my book. Give it a 25 mile battery so that I can limp home if I need to, and I can plug it in for a charge at night, and run for a while without touching the engine, and it's near perfect.

The part where I have to disagree with you is how rich farmers are. Yes, some farming corporations are wealthy, but farmers are typically land rich and cash poor. Just because my nominal net worth is high doesn't mean that I can tap it. (Oh, and it's not all that high.)
