Facebook to let users turn off political adverts:

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg says users will be able to turn off political adverts on the social network in the run-up to the 2020 US election.

In a piece written for USA Today newspaper, he also says he hopes to help four million Americans sign up as new voters.

Facebook has faced heavy criticism for allowing adverts from politicians that contain false information.

Rival social platform Twitter banned political advertising last October.

"For those of you who've already made up your minds and just want the election to be over, we hear you -- so we're also introducing the ability to turn off seeing political ads," Mr Zuckerberg wrote.

Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram will give users the option to turn off political adverts when they appear or they can block them using the settings features.

Users that have blocked political adverts will also be able to report them if they continue to appear.

The feature, which will start rolling out on Wednesday, allows users to turn off political, electoral and social issue adverts from candidates and other organisations that have the "Paid for" political disclaimer.

The company said it plans to make the feature available to all US users over the next few weeks and will offer it in other countries this autumn.

There are plenty of people interested in intelligent, moral candidates without a big history of lies and corruption. Their desires are ignored in favor of the party propaganda machine and its billionaire backers. That's true on both sides of the aisle.

Whether you love Bernie Sanders or hate him, there's a strong argument to be made that there were 10+ of the 20-some candidates in the Democratic Presidential Primary solely to pull away enough Sanders supporters to allow Biden to win the nomination. Ads about social issues, elections or politics are:
Made by, on behalf of, or about a candidate for public office, a political figure, a political party or advocates for the outcome of an election to public office; or
About any election, referendum, or ballot initiative, including "go out and vote" or election campaigns; or
About social issues in any place where the ad is being placed; or
      Regulated as political advertising.

The first, second, and fourth seem straightforward enough. The one that is most questionable is the third one, and it is probably no coincidence it was placed there based on studies of how people read things and what they pay attention.

Of course, political ads of all kinds can be worked around any direct "political" classification. Make a video ad for a truck, and then throw in a few comments on "your own hard work" and "as long as taxes are low" or "drill here and drill now for cheap gas". Voila, you claim to sell a truck but it's a conservative political ad. Or make a video ad for a truck, and then throw in a few comments on "built by organized labor", "used by the strong people in the Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers", and maybe "if the minimum wage was higher, maybe more good people could afford this fine product". Voila, you claim to sell a truck but it's a liberal political ad.

If anything, this makes political advertising worse because the users will have to pay more attention to realize they're being hit with propaganda. All of us like to think we're too smart to be tricked by that kind of thing, but we're all wrong. The best option is to stop using Facebook.

No he means everyone should hide in their homes and do nothing. Because chaos is amazing. People getting killed and stores going under and fires are amazing! Can't get enough of that. Because somehow morons like that think that on the other end is glorious communism. Which has never been done correctly. Except they do not realize that the ones provoking them and giving them the ideas are the real ones who will be in charge. They murder them first. As they will quickly realize they have been sold a bill of goods. They would be in charge. They only needed the chance to make a difference! They were going to do it right *THIS TIME*.

The socialism experiment has failed we have the dead of 100million to prove it. But no they will get it right *THIS TIME*. Trust them they read a book or two on it! I have too https://www.amazon.com/Gulag-Archipelago-Experiment-Literary-Investigation/dp/0061253715 [amazon.com]

They think 1984 and Animal farm are books on what the republican want to do and they miss that it is a scathing review of what happens in communism and socialism. Tripping over each other to show how progressive they are. Reinventing terms because they know the old ones have baggage now. Everyone is equal but some are more equal than others. Black lives matters.

By the rest of the world, you mean a handful of countries in Europe which amount to less than 10% of the world's population, right? And if we're being precise about the countries you consider to be "the rest of the world" it'd be more like less than 5% of the world.

And even within those negligibly small countries, it depends on the issues you're talking about. For instance Norway, and it's 5 million citizens, are one of those countries you're referencing. Did you know there that, on public, television they ran a series called Hjernevask [wikipedia.org]. It was about gender studies and related programs. Very progressive as you'd no doubt expect. Except Hjernevask means 'to brainwash' and the series was not only incredibly critical of the entire field, but was met with a universally positive reception that ultimately led to the cessation of funding for such programs in Norway. It's an awesome series by the way. It has links to the videos on the Wiki page.

However, such a thing would be framed as misogynistic or even Nazi propaganda or whatever sort of nonsense in America. Even corporate America has jumped on this bandwagon. YouTube has now, somewhat recently, decided to label the videos as containing "inappropriate content" requiring a login to view. No idea when that happened but it's new. Ultimately many democratic social views would not only be considered ultra far left in the "rest of the world", even that negligibly small chunk you're talking about when you say such things, but they would be considered dangerously extremist.

Also, further irony. Your "rest of the world" is, in effect, equivalent to 'white people who agree with me'. In order to be a good progressive you're supposed to align with the 80% of the world and condemn whitey! The only problem is that that 80% of the world you're supposed to align with ranges the gamut between hates and laughs at your ideology. 白左 would be a fun search term for you. I'll help you get started here [wikipedia.org] so you needn't concern yourself about search results returning only those squiggly letters of the fascist racist misogynistic transphobic cis gendered squinty eyed nazis.
