Okay, I love me some country music (not twang pop) but I also got a sense of humor, so this shit struck me as hilarious when I read it this morning: Country music is farm emo.

Or is the phrase "Country music is farm emo", the funny thing? It's more of a true statement and only funny, if you're lacking sleep kind of thing.

The phrase. Country music fans very much do not tend to look like emo fans. There are absolutely a lot of wallow in your sorrow country songs though, so it's technically true. Guess it could apply to the blues as well though.

They definitely have their own style, but I can't stand to listen to depressing music. There's enough pain and suffering that I see every day without listening to someone wail on about how grandma got run over by a reindeer. Though, that's probably an exception, that one is hilarious.

Not terribly, but some is alright. It mainly depends on what they wrote the song about. I generally prefer to listen to happy, upbeat, kinds of songs, or just plain 'ol easy listening music.

"Don't worry, be happy" song then? Or just "Happy" (Pharrell Williams)? I've had the "lime in the coconut" song stuck in my head for weeks. Not sure why. The word "woke" in the news, and the line "called the doctor, woke him up", and then I'm done.

My mom always had classical (symphonic, orchestral, etc.) music on when I was 0-12 or so. I appreciate it, sometimes like it live, but rarely listen to in on radio or recordings. I'm an occasional sound engineer (audio mix, soundboard, etc.) and I've done some gentle amplification of orchestral music. It's a light artistic touch to just enhance it enough to balance things.

I also like upbeat music, but I kind of like a wide range of music, so I need balance. I hack around on electric guitar, and when "riffing" I tend to fall into aeolian, dorian, phrygian, and locrian minor modes. I like Bach, and Bach-influenced guitar-driven music. But again, in moderation. Too much and it gets overwhelming.

If I had life to do over I'd have gotten heavily into the music / audio world. Or medicine.

I actually don't listen to a lot of music. When I've listened to it quite a bit, I would listen to the local 101.FM Classical music based in Fort Worth, I believe. Generally in my car, but my commute for the last year has been 5 mins to / from work, so not been listening much. Still, I'd be hard pressed to identify Beethoven vs Bach vs Chopin, or whatever, let alone the 4th movement of whatever piece. I just like classical in general.

I've taken to listening to a good bit of "The Piano Guys" at work, when there's no one else in the room. They've put out a lot of fun songs.

This was a pretty interesting instrument as well, the Viola Organista: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5648Pm_gNfQ [youtube.com] It's like listening to a bunch of people playing, but all that sound is coming from the one instrument. http://www.violaorganista.com/en/home/ [violaorganista.com]

I like various kinds of music. I just don't like listening to depressing music as a general rule. May as well listen to something that will lift your spirits.

I'd never heard of a viola organista- that's wild- thanks!!

Working in the music / audio world has been very interesting. For sure, people who play instruments are usually very different from non-musicians in what they listen to, etc. I find music distracting and rarely have it on in the background. If I like it, I want to focus on it and listen. If I don't like it, it needs to be stopped.

And what I play is often very different from what I listen to, although sometimes something I hear inspires some music to come out.

I know some people who are really good on the sound board, but they don't play a lick of any instruments nor sing. It seems to me that a person should sing or play something to understand getting a good mix, but not necessarily.

Thanks again- I'll listen to some more of viola organista.

You are right in this case... let me amend by saying that metal is my preferred genre, but I'm also partial to First Wave type stuff, and have discovered a liking for synthwave music as well. Classic Rock is always a good choice for me as well. Most country, hip hop, and modern rap hold very little appeal however.

In general, most anything that has a higher energy level appeals to me. I'm usually pretty sedate, and need music to stimulate me rather than relax.

What is "pure country"? I always thought that country was where all the folk and ballad singers went, when those genres died out. Then, it started morphing into some crazy stuff starting around - ohhhh - mid '80's?

I swear, the last good singer to carve a niche in the country world, was Shania Twain, and she borrowed a helluva lot from the Old World. River Dance was a helluva good performance! I kept wondering how she found all that talent, right here in America, or if she had to import a bunch of people from the UK and Europe.
