Parents more likely than non-parents to turn to alcohol during pandemic, survey finds:

The study, conducted by York University psychology researchers, surveyed Canadians early on in the pandemic and found that the use of alcohol as a coping strategy was highest among parents with young children, in addition to individuals experiencing greater depression and more social disconnection.

[...] Researchers surveyed 320 Canadians who drink alcohol within one month of the initiation of the COVID-19 emergency response using an online crowdsourcing platform. The average age of participants was 32 years old.

[...] The study also found that income loss was associated with increased alcohol consumption early in the pandemic, whereas living alone was associated with increased "solitary drinking behaviour."

[...] York University assistant professor and co-author of the study Jeffrey Wardell said the new research points to the importance of addressing coping-related alcohol use due to COVID-19 but added that more research is needed.

"Using alcohol to cope with distress is a clearly established risk factor for alcohol use disorder," Wardell said in the release. "This is concerning because these alcohol problems could worsen over time, suggesting it may be important to help these individuals find more positive coping strategies rather than using alcohol to cope."

Indeed, how long has it been that wine mommies have been a stereotype? I'm pretty sure that's why Costco occasionally has those wine glasses that can hold a literal 10 gallons in them. Somehow, it's not real alcoholism if you're drinking rose rather than Jack Daniel's.

That is hardly a surprise. If you have to be stuck at home with the kids all day you need something to take the edge away. So you drink. Which might have this tendency to be the basis of how even more kids are created.

Increased use of alcohol still emits combustion gasses. The future is electric vehicles.

If you don't have kids, you have less need for a large vehicle, and tend to drive less.

The humans need to get the cost of bugs down to the level you'd see on a lizard person city-ship before they have any chance of catching on here. Now those locusts you find on this planet, those have a chance of resembling a good lizard person snack, with the right BBQ sauce. The humans just need to develop the tech to harvest them right out of the sky, and that should bring the price down to a reasonable level while also being a win for agriculture.

The "ur gonna eat bugs" thing is just such right-wing drivel. Nobody is going to eat bugs until the cost is below rice and beans (example given previously by one of the few people here worth reading). The Trumpers are so frightened of monsters under their bed they're getting ready for Kristallnacht 2.0. Just fucking ridiculous and sad.

I don't know of any children, but that doesn't mean I don't have any! And I have definitely been drinking more this year. Will some kid who looks like me show up on my doorstep one day saying "you knew my mother"?
