Brain’s mechanism of creating detailed and enduring memories unravelled in a new study:

The study, published in Nature Communications, highlights "inhibitory connections" in the brain, which keep the brain functioning healthy by dampening the nerve cell activity.

Memories are created when connections between the nerve cells which send and receive signals from the brain are made stronger, the media release of the study says. This prompts a response from the neighbouring nerve cells in the hippocampus – a region of the brain crucially important for memory formation – which get "stimulated" or "excited". This is where the inhibitory connections come into play. They prevent neurons from being stimulated, thereby preventing any changes and ensuring that the memory is 'stabilized', the experiment found.

[...] Apart from stabilizing memories, computational modelling showed that this inhibitory learning also enabled the hippocampus to “prevent information from interfering with and disrupting memories”. The findings provide insight into how humans form expectations and make near-accurate predictions about what could happen in the future.

Sounds like this new finding still offers no clue in that area.

This is different information to what's in the (very interesting) article...but we may know something about improving memory already.

Dr Dale Bredesen can cure Alzheimer's with a multi-faceted protocol, although it's difficult to properly adhere to it. They've done a lot of work, especially with the various proteins and enzymes surrounding APP. Here's a good interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq7uVZ_0D3U& [youtube.com]

Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a signalling protein associated with large hippocamps and improved memory. You can raise it with HIIT and other aerobic exercise and the hormetic chemical sulforaphane (from cruciferous vegetables). You need the nutrient precursurs like zinc and PTC in place for growth. This can happen in adults.
      There's also Nerve Growth Factor.
Acetylcholine (Ach) is the main neurotransmitter of memory, low levels are associated with small hippocamps. Ach levels are associated with it's main precursor phospahdidylcholine (PTC), and PTC's own precursors (EPA/DHA (fish oil) and choline sources such as Alpha-GPC). PTC is additionally a preferred cell membrane lipid which ends up facilitating neurotransmission in two different ways. Neurotransmitters must cross cell membranes, and the "electric signal" is also carried by ions that must also cross cell membranes. Fish eggs, bird eggs, sardines and other oily fish all contain large amounts of PTC. PTC is what makes krill oil better than fish oil (by weight, if not by price).

I think BDNF and PTC have helped my memory, although it must be said that giving up caffeine and alcohol seem just as beneficial. There's no point rebuilding a burning house. I can't get all the blood tests I need to know where I'm at with the Bredesen protocol.

As always, IANAD, TINMA and random supplements off Amazon aren't going to cut it. You need to somehow get medical grade supplements if that's the route you want to take.

Back in 1981, part of my bachelors project was about simulating neuron cells in the brain. A crude one, but it assumed stimulating and dampening axon connections between neurons. It was not my idea - biologists who were clients for the project told me so.
