I see two local stories from local sources and I'm sure there are more.

FBI says it thwarted plot to violently overthrow elected government and kidnap elected governor and hold a "trial" for treason. (gee, who sounds treasonous here?)

Plot involved reaching out to members of a Michigan militia (according to federal affidavit). (I'm sure it was a "well regulated" militia of crazy lunatics with guns who have to "take back our country and our rats!".)

"Several members talked about murdering 'tyrants' or 'taking' a sitting governor," an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit.

More than 12 people were arrested late Wednesday on state and federal charges.

“The group talked about creating a society that followed the U.S. Bill of Rights and where they could be self-sufficient,” the FBI agent wrote.

The FBI was already tracking the militia in March after a local police department learned members were trying to obtain addresses of local law-enforcement officers, the FBI agent wrote.

In late June, Fox posted on Facebook a video in which he complained about the state’s judicial system and COVID-19 restrictions on gyms operating in Michigan.

"We ain't going to let 'em burn our f---in' state down. I don't give a f--- if there's only 20 or 30 of us, dude, we'll go out there and use deadly force," said Fox during the surveillance operation, according to an audio recording quoted in the affidavit.

“The lockdown has been a lightning rod for anti-government extremists in this country, and Gov. Whitmer has been on the forefront of their targeting,”

(And the US has 4 % of the world population but 20 % of the covid deaths. Before some idiot AC says [citation needed]... Google for numbers "worldwide covid deaths" 1.06M and "us covid deaths" 212K. Advanced mathematical technique called "division". Similarly Google for world and us population, use similar "division" technique.)

According to other news source, 13 charged in plot.

In Covid-19 news, Trump says it must have been gold star families that infected him with Covid-19. Because viruses are selective in that they only infect bad people such as those "losers and suckers".

Fun fact: Some people don't like facts.

The militia reached out to them... about protesting. If they were more involved than that, those two articles certainly don't say that. These were a gang of idiots, coached and led by the FBI, who then gets brownie points to cover up their incompetence.

Most FBI foiled plots are fake or exaggerated. At least they nabbed several idiots this time instead of one mentally ill loner.

Same conflict of interest is what lead to the War on Drugs starting its anti-marijuana phase in the 1930s. With Prohibition about to be repealed, Harry Anslinger, the head of the Department of Prohibition, faked evidence that marijuana was dangerous. He found a literal ax murderer who happened to also be a user of marijuana. It worked. Scared people demanded that they be kept safe from reefer madness.

The article at the BBC [bbc.com] states:

The group wished to gather about "200 men" to storm the capitol building and take hostages, including the governor. They hoped to enact their plan before the November presidential election. If that failed, they planned to attack the governor at her home, officials say.

The accused "co-ordinated surveillance of the governors' vacation home", said the US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, adding that they also planned Molotov cocktail attacks on police officers, purchased a taser, and pooled their funds to purchase explosives and tactical equipment ... held weapons training in several states, and at times attempted to create bombs, the FBI says, adding that their training was captured on video.

All of the setups by the FBI that I've heard of were largely limited to finding a few people who were griping, goading them into expressing interest in harming others, then getting them to do one or two simple things in preparation for it; they don't usually go to the lengths described above.

Who did they buy weapons and bomb-making equipment from? FBI. Who was with them surveying the house and it's surroundings? FBI.
These people are idiots, no doubt. Maybe, they are dangerous idiots who need to be incarcerated for public safety. However, I don't trust anything the FBI says, and I don't buy that they were actually going to do or plan much of anything without FBI assistance.

Key to your quote is their wish, or their desire. These fools wouldn't qualify as a militia, by any stretch of the imagination. They don't have 200 members. They don't have weapons, they don't have explosives, they don't have diddly-squat.

BTW - 200 men weren't needed for the operation they were envisioning. 20 men would have been excessive, most likely. Snatch and run is best accomplished with a small force, between 4 and 12 people involved. Separate units might be employed to run interference, but again, 200 people are way too many.

This does look a lot like the FBI setting up a small group of village idiots for publicity purposes. 6 arrests? Par for the course.

Yes, because the government needs to manufacture every terrorist nutcase. When it does create them, they tend to be aimed at other states, such as the Soviets in Afghanistan, and it bites the United States in the ass later.

Everything is a conspiracy when it is embarrassing to the American right.
