Too bad I can't come up with a reasonable excuse for buying one with a damn-near-new phone in my hand. I'm a huge sucker for pocket-sized things that run Linux with keyboards.
Same here. This is very much my kind of device but sometime in December my old phone finally gave up its lease on life after a 5-6 year run and I had to get a replacement. Ended up with a Note 10+ because I wanted a gigantic screen — my eyesight sucks, plus the extra-long form factor means more on-screen keyboard space when needed — and Best Buy was running a holiday promotion so I got a good deal on it. As much as I'd like something like this, I'm not even a year into owning my current phone and I absolutely refuse to replace them until I have no other choice. I hate the habit some people have of wasting perfectly good hardware just to chase the new shiny every year, and refuse to join in.
Though, thanks to some upcoming Android changes [github.com] that affect functionality and existence of tools like Termux, there's a good chance the lifecycle of my current phone will end up being shorter than I would like. The only reason I tolerate the more annoying aspects of Android is it's been open enough that I can still use tools like termux make use of the Linux underpinnings, which has been "good enough" most of the time. It's been close enough to what I want that it wasn't worth the effort of trying to use alternatives, which have been inconvenient to get and use in the US. I don't use the phone quite enough for the improvement to be worth the extra effort; however, once it gets too annoying to do what I want with Android, that will change and it will go into the trash bin alongside "my way or the highway" iOS.
Back in 2012 my first smartphone was a Motorola Photon Q, the XT879 "Asanti," chosen specifically because it had a keyboard and could run what was then called CyanogenMod. I'm in the market for a new phone as my old Moto C Plus is really starting to show its age, and was this close to picking up the G8 Power or waiting for the G9 equivalent...and then saw this.
Is there any mention of price anywhere? Those specs do not look cheap...

Various "early bird" prices that are common on crowdfunding projects, but those two are the main tiers. 10% more for 33% more RAM and double the storage seems like a no-brainer.
Waaaaaay too expensive for me. My freaking laptop didn't cost that much and it has a Ryzen 3700U in it! Looks like I'll be going with the G9 Power whenever it comes out, though if I had the money to spare I'd be all over this. Wish the Pinephone team would put out something with an SD 620 or so in it...

I think Pine64 used Allwinner or Rockchip for everything. So the obvious choice would be the RK3588 [cnx-software.com]. Maybe the unknown Allwinner A300 [cnx-software.com].
Thanks for the info takyon. Looks like usable Linux phones may become much more readily available in the near future. Damn my old phone for not lasting long enough *shakes fist*

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I had a Samsung Captivate Glide. Slide out keyboard. Android. But it wasn't like having real Linux.
It was also fun that I could use an OTG connector to attach a keyboard or mouse to the phone, and they actually worked.
Why is it that when I hold a stick, everyone begins to look like a pinata?
