That the Democrats lose House seats, do not win the Senate and barely manage to drag their demented presidential candidate towards a stalemate tells a lot about their lack of sane policies. A donor party completely disinterested in what the people really want - medicare for all, no fracking etc. - will have little chance to survive a future onslaught of conservatives with a more competent figure head than Donald Trump. ...should Trump lose this election, Trumpism will only grow and make the U.S. ungovernable.

Exactly. Because if the democrats had won the prez, and overwhelming majorities in the House and the Senate, then they would actually have to govern instead of argue and complain about "obstruction". They would have no excuse, if they had all the votes.

Now they can continue to complain about being "obstructed" by the republicans, which of course their base will believe because CNN will tell them it is true, and they can continue as they were.

Their worst nightmare would have been to have now been on the hook for actually doing something, with only themselves to blame for the inevitable blowup.

And when it comes to Trump you say "I wish he would shut his mouth" because you're perfextly fine with his type of fascism. Here is what his good friend and founder of your favorite 'newz' site had to say recently.

In the video of his podcast War Room: Pandemic, Bannon called for Fauci and FBI director Chris Wray to get fired at the start of President Donald Trump's second term should he be re-elected. In the video the former Breitbart executive chairman said he'd "like to go a step farther," but said "the president's a kind hearted man."

Disturbingly, he doesn't hesitate before saying he'd like to "go back to the old times of Tudor England" to implement medieval sentences for Fauci and Wray. "I'd put the heads on pikes, right? I'd put them at the two corners of the White House as a warning to Federal Bureaucrats: you either get with the program or you're gone.

We dodged the bullet this time, barely, provided that NV does in fact go D or if GA goes D. It won't be so easy next time. Optimistically we have 8 years to build an alternative to the conservative Democratic party. However, I think we only have 4 years. Biden/Harris is going to be more status quo (hence conservative) neoliberalism. The failures of neoliberalism will drive a more powerful fascist movement in 4 years.

ISA/Socialist Alternative USA: Drive Out Trump and Shut Down the System! [internationalsocialist.net]

This election shows that the Democrats can’t decisively defeat the far right. Socialist Alternative thinks we need a new party based on the working class, which stands for seizing the wealth of the top corporations and putting them under democratic workers’ control and management.

In a FoxNews exit poll yesterday, 72% of voters said they’re in favor of a government-run health-care program. In Florida, where Trump won, 61% of people voted for a ballot measure for a state-wide $15 an hour minimum wage. This shows that a clear appeal to working-class voters, which Bernie could have done effectively, would have likely defeated Trump in a landslide.

Trump has criminally mishandled the COVID pandemic — leading to hundreds of thousands of U.S. deaths — overseen mass unemployment and a further slide into poverty for millions of Americans, and yet the Democrats did all they could to “snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.” They put up an embarrassing candidate who was kept out of the public eye, didn’t have a “ground game” for their campaign in key swing states, refused to adopt wildly popular policies like Medicare for All and taxing the rich, and didn’t conduct a mass voter registration campaign to get millions of new voters who despise Trump. Yet the Democrats’ biggest failings weren’t just “mistakes” but instead due to their fundamental nature as a pro-corporate party controlled by billionaire backers.

In the final days of the campaign, Biden made clear he would never ban fracking, would never cut police funding, and would accept yet another right-wing addition to the Supreme Court. He (again!) said that cops should shoot suspects “in the leg” as his solution to racist police murders, and he refused to support Medicare for All as the election took place at the height of the pandemic. It comes as no surprise that an Axios poll showed that over 58% of Democratic voters were motivated to cast their ballots “against Trump” rather than “for Biden.”

All this left space for Trump to portray himself as an “outsider” despite being in the White House! Trump criticized Biden from the “left” on Biden’s racist 1994 Crime Bill, as well as his support for ongoing wars and pro-corporate trade deals. This was combined with a vicious cocktail of Trump’s racism, sexism, authoritarianism, appeals to the far right, conspiracy theories, and “law and order” rhetoric.

The Democratic Party leadership fought harder and more effectively against Bernie in the primary than they did against Trump in the general election. Yet the liberal pundits will seek to play a “blame game,” claiming that this situation is due to people who didn’t vote (especially people of color), independent voters, racist ideas in the white working class (which is a real factor), or Democrats being associated with the “radical left.” Instead, the Democratic Party leadership needs to look in the mirror to see who gave Trump the opening to try to steal this election. In addition, Sanders himself shouldn’t have capitulated to Biden, and he shouldn’t have self-censored his previous criticisms of the Democratic Party. This helped give room for Trump to appear as the anti-establishment candidate.

Indeed, I think you are correct. Biden/Harris will need to score some quick victories which appeal to a broad bipartisan swathe of America. If they can manage to do that, they might manage to get four more years and pull the country back from the brink of fascism. God, I really hope they succeed in that!

This just might be a Pyrrhic victory for the Democrats -- even I have accepted the possibility of a Biden/Harris presidential win, however, they should be careful what they wish for. They've inherited the double-whammy of Antifa/BLM and COVID lockdowns, so it will be in peoples' minds to blame Democrats/progressives whether or not those problems magically disappear upon the Biden coronation (thanks a lot for costing small business owners our livelihoods, assholes), or if those have become Golems outside of their control and ChiCom Pelosi and her army of Jewish pedophiles in Californian government want the lockdowns extended for another couple years. Everybody knows that Trump fought the lockdowns (saying that he didn't believe in 'science' or something), so now the Democrats are stuck either further oppressing everybody or tacitly admitting that it was all a sham.

It's now mainstream in my city that businesses are going to disobey any further lockdown orders, I'm seeing more and more people shed the masks even in official capacity. Keep the people locked down and we might just see patriots fighting alongside Antifa and BLM, and it won't be pretty for Jewish neighborhoods -- though it would be the desired outcome for Chinks and Jews who want to see America fall and buy cheap property as results of strife and misery. Big tech already pissed off people (except Jews) on both sides and revealed who they actually are, and that even folks who toe the line can be deplatformed on a whim.

Should Biden and Kamala win, their best option is to do nothing and pretend Republicans are stopping them from doing anything, just like how the last 4 years have been. Americans will still be broke while Israel gets its billions of funding and American soldiers dying for them in the sandbox, but at least domestic unrest will be staved off around the homefront.

The mayor of Portland does indeed support rioters. Maybe not looters, I'd have to do some research to say that. The mayor of Seattle supported rioters, looters, and only drew the line at murders within CHOP or CHAZ or whatever cute name is fashionable this month. Other mayors around the US have been supportive of rioting and looting, to greater and lesser degrees. I'm happy to say that ALMOST ALL mayors have been supportive of legitimate demonstrations.

You say you own your shit, then go ahead and own it. The moment a person is injured and/or property damage happens, it is no longer a "peaceful demonstration", instead it has turned into a riot. Own it.

I will not go so far as to say that disobeying a police order constitutes a riot. That depends on the circumstances.

When a genuine peaceful demonstration passes through your town, there might be a little litter to pick up, signs and flyers to take down, maybe some trampled shrubbery to tend to. No broken windows, no burnt out cars, no looting, only very minor injuries, no broken fences, none of that crap.

            2) Tarring and feathering government officials who don't respect people's freedom

These are all things that happened in colonial America. Since you spend so much time complaining about rioting and looting, surely you must agree that these actions were wrong in colonial America. Therefore, you should go declare yourself a subject of the British Crown.

In your logic, it's a travesty if the government says you have to wear a mask in public places to avoid spreading COVID-19. But you seem okay with police killing black people, including the flawed execution of a no-knock warrant that resulted in the killing of Breonna Taylor.

You say that you want weapons to protect yourself from tyranny and maintain your freedoms. But when black people are armed and actually do declare autonomy from a government that doesn't respect their rights, then it's a travesty.

You take very extreme positions demanding that government not take away any of your liberties, even to protect the freedoms of others. But when black people want liberty, too, then you become a statist bootlicker.

Breonna Taylor wasn't a rioter or a looter. She was innocent. The police executed the no-knock warrant at the wrong address. A mistake does not make it legal or justified. No innocent person should have to fear that a SWAT team is going to bust down the door of their apartment without warning and kill them.

I'm the AC you responded to above. I don't read minds, but you were talking about Tamir Rice. What happened to him was extremely wrong. Police go into situations looking for a confrontation. Instead of telling Tamir to put his hands up, they should have tried just talking to him normally. He'd probably be alive if the police had acted responsibly.

I'm from St. Louis but I don't live there any longer. I went to school for four years at UM-St. Louis, which is about a mile from where the Ferguson riots happened. The motto of the St. Louis County police is "To serve and protect." Police shouldn't think they can just order people around, bully them, and use force whenever anyone questions them. They're supposed to serve and protect us.

Just a few months ago, I was out walking at night in a fairly nice neighborhood. I had a friend out with me and we were taking a socially distanced walk. Because the color of our shirts matched two out of three people who had been breaking into cars earlier in the evening. The officer who stopped us had a bad attitude and she was immediately being a smartass for no reason. It wasn't until more officers showed up who had seen us out walking earlier in the evening that we were told we were free to go. She was looking for trouble with flimsy reasoning. There was no physical description of the suspects beyond the color of our shirts. Given that I'm very short and I have a weight problem, had I been responsible, it should have been very easy to describe me to the police. I had a white shirt on and my friend's shirt was red. We're in Lincoln, Nebraska, where red and white are the colors of the Huskers. A red and a white shirt would match a huge part of the population. That officer just wanted trouble and we were fortunate.

By the way, Ferguson isn't the disaster area people think. UMSL's campus was a country club just a few decades ago. The neighborhoods around the campus were once very affluent. There are a lot of very nice old houses right near campus. I never felt unsafe as a white person in a predominately black neighborhood. But there are a number of ticket mills in the area and plenty of cops around looking for trouble.

Police really aren't very good at solving crimes, nor are they very good at curbing traffic violations. Now, we really do need someone to investigate crimes. We need someone to respond when we call 911 because we're in danger. But we don't need patrols that are looking to ticket and harass people to get revenue for cities and target black people. The problem is that last part encompasses a lot of what police officers do. When we talk about abolishing the police, we want to get rid of the patrols and buillshit like civil asset forfeiture. We want to stop the war on drugs and programs like stop and frisk that have been implemented in a very racist manner and aren't helpful. Abolishing the police doesn't mean we want anarchy. It does mean replacing the police with people whose purpose is to serve and protect.

To your credit, you said Breonna Taylor's name and admitted she was the victim of a horrible injustice. And Tamir Rice damn well should be alive today, too. Worse yet, police are rarely held accountable when they abuse their power.

I just want background checks and some age limits.

Actually, I would like a hell of a lot more than that. I want the owner of any weapon used in the commission of a felony held responsible. So, if little Junior gets a hold of Dad's or Mom's gun, I want Dad and/or Mom to be potentially held responsible for whatever crimes little Junior commits, above and beyond the felony charges Junior may face. Second, I want to see much more stringent background checks for those amassing a weapons arsenal. It should get progressively harder to get a permit beyond the purchase of the first few guns. And I would like the Sheriff to be held accountable for that; too many of the Sheriffs in the country are handing out gun permits like gift certificates. Just my $0.02 worth.

100% guns should be licensed, prove you know how to use a gun safely and understand the laws.

Also, some people should not be allowed to own guns, such as this guy.

Modern Republicans have gone off the deep end. There's no other way to put it. Republicans weren't always like this, but their actions now are dangerous.

Scientists warned Reagan and Bush of an oncoming crisis. They said that CFCs were depleting the ozone layer and, left unchecked, would cause severe issues in the future. Reagan and Bush didn't like the idea of regulations that might be harmful to the economy and weren't entirely confident in the science. But their economic advisors said that the risk was great and, if the scientists were right, failing to act would lead to much greater harm in the future. Although personally reluctant, Reagan and Bush took action and the US was a leader in implementing the Montreal Protocol. The ozone layer is recovering and history has vindicated them.

Republicans of that era would want to reopen the economy during this pandemic. They wouldn't like restrictions on individual liberty. But scientists are advising that we may need some restrictions to bring the pandemic under control. Republicans from that era would probably support a short lockdown, perhaps a month long, to slow the rate of new infections. They would then insist on a national mask mandate and social distancing rules. Those Republicans would argue that relatively limited restrictions on individual liberty would be necessary in order to bring the pandemic under control. They would note that not acting would result in a greater economic hit overall and that we can't be free if we have to worry about catching a dangerous virus while going about our daily activities. They would accept the science and choose the least restrictive option that would allow us to mostly resume our daily lives and economic activities in a reasonably safe manner.

Current Republicans are nothing like that. They deny science. They take actions that supposedly prioritize freedom but actually jeopardize both safety and the economy. As a result, the pandemic is out of control and we're going to take a big economic hit this winter because of it.

Reagan and Bush had plenty of faults, no doubt. They certainly made plenty of mistakes and did plenty of dumb things. Trump and current Republicans actively discredit Dr. Fauci. In contrast, Bush very much trusted Fauci [cbs58.com] and took his advice. Despite the valid criticism of Reagan's handling of HIV, Fauci made it clear that Reagan took his advice seriously [aaas.org].
