Arthur T Knackerbracket has found the following story:

Luxury carmaker Bentley has unveiled plans to go fully electric by 2030. Before then, the brand will be switching its model range to offer only plug-in hybrid or battery electric cars by 2026.

Volkswagen-owned Bentley also aims to be completely carbon neutral across its manufacturing within a decade.

Electric cars are growing in popularity and sales have tripled in the UK so far this year.

"Within a decade, Bentley will transform from a 100-year-old luxury car company to a new, sustainable, wholly ethical role model for luxury," said Adrian Hallmark, Bentley's chief executive.

Workers on internal combustion technology will be redeployed as it shifts to pure battery electric cars.

All of this pushing for all electric vehicles seem overly optimistic. Electric vehicles, where practical, are fine.

Reducing dependency on gasoline is great. But creating a complete dependency on Chinese batteries? Do we really want that?

I don't see electric vehicles as being practical in all situations. I know they have gotten the recharge time down quite a bit, but it is still not as fast as filling up a tank of gas. Where I live anyway, everyone parks outside in a large set of parking lots, and I've never noticed anyone electrically charging a vehicle at home.

Even though electricity still has to come from somewhere, it is great to have a goal to reduce exhaust emissions within cities. But I get tired of idiots wanting everything 100% electric. Of course, in this case, just some luxury car caters to those kinds of idiots anyway.

      > just some luxury car caters to those kinds of idiots anyway.

Pretty high odds that anyone that can afford a Bentley already has a house and garage where they can charge at home. Or it they live in a NY penthouse, the building will install a charger in the basement car park for a nominal(!!) charge.

It's electric cars for *everyone* where I see a big problem, you hit it with:

Those kinds of apartment complexes aren't going to be in a hurry to add power wiring to their parking spaces.

Those kinds of apartment complexes aren't going to be in a hurry to add power wiring to their parking spaces.

Yeah, only way electric cars become "green" is when it's mass used. Even then it's not truly green. Since it just offset the pollution from your immediate area to the powerplant. Places like CA it could never happen either. Considering the current blackouts they get. Imagine the millions of gas vehicles going electric and then charging at the same time. Plants would turn on their gas burners to provide the power. Electric prices would go up. Not even sure where they will get all the copper to install all the new transmission lines. How would the apartment complexes charge for powering vehicles? Add it to everyone's rent? Then you would have problems with random people coming to the complex, unplugging occupant's cars to plug theirs in. Plug locks maybe?

Only real benefit to an electric car right now is that it can accelerate really fast. It's a toy. Not sure how it will become the socialist people's car like the leftist want.

I see more of a matter as having backdoors to conduct assassinations rather than matters of "Chinese batteries" and "MUH SMOG." Remember, if any government can commandeer your vehicle, then you don't have to be a target yourself -- just being close to a target by circumstance will get your car used as a kill vehicle, and either way, the Chinks and Jews will cover up your death as they did the death of Michael Hastings.

Why does every critic of EVs try to apply non-EV practices to it? With gas, its a special substance where you need dedicated stations. Electricity is everywhere where we have powered infrastructure, why go to a gas station to refill when you're low? Why can't we extend our infrastructure to allow folks to charge anytime anywhere?

Also if you really need to "refuel" when you're low, why does it have to be a charge up as oppose to a battery swap from a swap kiosk? If the industry standardize on form factor and build battery swap capabilities into their vehicle, we can develop automated kiosk to swap batteries. Batteries can be a rental commodity and spawn a new industry.

EVs definitely still have limits based on the current infra maturity, but there's a lot of limitations being cited that are solely due to a lack of imagination or clinging to an operational model for a different paradigm

I think it is strange that the top luxury car manufacturers are that slow to switch to electric. It was always their declared goal to keep the car occupants free from any disturbing engine effects. Kind'a even in sports cars, as this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU7nto1GsS8 [youtube.com] shows (- but what it also shows, with its under 50 views over 6 years, is that apparently hardly anyone but me remembers). That coin trick would be trivial to achieve with an electric drivetrain, let alone the electric wouldn't have to bother with all the exhaust insulation needed for the luxury cars.

Yeah well, I doubt that I would ever buy the new electric version.

The thing is that with these type of cars the sound it produces is a part of the pleasure it gives to you to drive one. The first time I started Bentley Continental GT in a carage I got hooked directly, there is just no comparison.
