For one, the general population realizes that antimaskers and covid skeptics are full of shit, and there are more calls for heavier fines and jail time. One private party here got over $400,000 in fines. Hundreds of people getting multiple $1,500 fines. It's like when seatbelt laws were first introduced. People only started obeying when the "education period " Andes and fines kicked in.
Trump is a goner. Fun to watch him twistvin the wind.
We have multiple vaccines. Vaccine skepticism means I'll get mine faster because some of those ahead of me will refuse. Silver lining time. Unfortunately I have friends who are totally anti-vaxxers. That's the dark cloud. A couple of annoying people in the neighbourhood have died from covid. That made others take it more seriously. Again, silver lining around a dark cloud. Personally, their annoying behaviour didn't bother me, but I know it got to some people, who probably could use a lesson in patience.
The economy is recovering here quicker than expected, despite the latest lockdown. People are working from home, businesses are adapting (like they had a choice ???), and most people are ignoring the governments ever-changing policies and sticking with the basics we know work - distancing, masks, washing hands. The crybabies who complain about "muh rights" are mostly being made fun of, except in the prairies, where their stupidity has led to the virus being totally out of control and calls for people to stop being shits.

At least here in Europe, I see the don't-care-about-anyone-else-but-me faction extending their don't-care-about-anyone-else-but-me behaviour as they get bored of having to pretend to care about anyone else but themselves. And it only takes a small minority to spoil things for everyone. (2 stories on BBC News presently are Brits being dicks in .ch, and Brits being dicks in .au, when I left that country decades back, I left it for a reason, and that reason is being reified presently.)
Simply on the "vaccine" side, sure, we're moving forward, but it's hard not to see the current rollouts as anything more than the testing that still need to be done. Thank Turing we have multiple candidates, and more on the way, as it would be freakish if they were all to be perfect. So, yeah, we will see some unexpected side-effects of the vacine, complications with unexpected interaction, it's not a magic "stop" button. And there's still the spectre of the long term effects of the disease that no vaccine can undo. We simply don't know yet. May the studies be done scientifically, so that we can get the highest SNR possible, and make progress fastest.
Econony - well, each country has a different story to tell. We're one of the poor men of Europe, but we punch above our weight, and our stats (e.g. no need for lockdowns yet) and fundamentals both look pretty strong. But that doesn't reassure me that the brewpub I'm a part owner of will be able to start turning a profit any time soon after we're allowed to open again. Our export market was damaged too, predictably, so income is at rock bottom. I have no idea if my life savings will slowly evaporate away if things don't pick up. I do live in a part of town where businesses appear and disappear with incredible rapidity, so I'm sure entrepreneurs will fill the gaps around me, but I'm not sure they'll turn a profit either, we're a tourism-dependent economy.
Most scarily, what happens in Westpondia will affect everyone, worldwide. If Yellen persuades Biden that continuing to print money will solve problems, then more problems will arise. The big-business owners will cream billions in safe-haven assets off the bubbles that get further inflated by the fed, and the average folk will see their purchasing power, and any savings, absolutely annihilated. The late-20s/early-30s will be here again. It will be chaos. However, that might take several years, 2021 may avoid the worst.
But I ain't a negative nancy, I went for "about the same".

After I made my post, I got word from one of my sisters that the place I volunteer at was hit with covid. I wasn't called because I had been off for 5 days before the first person felt sick, and a week before the test results come back. Dodged the bullet because I had herniated an old temporary colostomy from the 90s.
How perversely lucky. Because I didn't feel lucky the last few weeks as it reduced.
Anyway, one of my friends who works there tested positive, so I offered to let her stay here to isolate from her hubby and stepson if she felt it necessary. Two spare rooms, separate electric heating and windows in every room, it can be made comparatively safe.

One of the things that told me I had a really great friend here in this once-foreign country (I knew basically no-one here when I moved, it was rather tabula rasa) was when I messaged him something like "Oh, shit, I proper fucked up", and his instantanious reponse wasn't "what did you do?", or laddish jokes about whether my partner had found out about something, but simply "how can I help?". My wellbeing got a huge boost, no matter what troubles had beset me.

I'd be more concerned about the ever-rising flood of jobs to China, thus finishing-off the middle class, faster than CA and NY could do it. Buy American... at least if you can find anything.

Language change is slow, and the the factions that need to be patronised (it is a description that diminishes them, rather than presenting them as something to revere or fear) have indeed been around for vastly different lengths of time. Sad pathetic righties are relatively recent, in all the countries I have any experience with, and I remember loony-lefties from the UK back in Thatcher's time, so that's over 3 decades head start.
Of course, describing them in patronising terms doesn't mean that they aren't potentially dangerous, it's just that sometimes othering righties as jack-booted nazis actually encourages them! You do have to chose how you other outgroups carefully depending on context. I mean, you'd hate to be the one carrying the banner that says "they're lazy and milk our welfare system" when the rest of the mob is carrying "they's tekkin our jurbs" ones, wouldn't you?

I am of the opinion that the world is very volatile at the moment, and I'd prefer that people take the time to think about their actions and their repercussions before doing anything.

Economically, businesses have to adapt to new working practices, and that takes time (e.g. introduction of customs regulations). If that is not done, then they simply stop trading => bad news.

We have a plausible explanation for Trump being rich. There is none for Biden. His legitimate pay is less than a FAANG software developer.
We have it documented that Joe Biden gets a 50% cut when his unqualified crackhead son Hunter gets miraculous Chinese investments and do-nothing Ukranian employment. There is nothing similar with the Trump family.

2020 was pretty good for me, 2021 probably ok too. I don't go outside anyway, so masks aren't that annoying, work has been steady, savings keep growing. All my relatives that died from covid were old religious fanatics who never cared about it, so I'm not sad (I also only met them at funerals of other deceased zealots, and don't remember them because there's too many when everybody has 10+ kids). I'm predicting interventions in Africa, middle east might blow up, but it will probably stew for a while more. I expect police killings to continue, and protests as well, but they won't be in the national press. Stimulus will continue to be focused on enriching shareholders, so we might see some occupy-style protests, but that's probably 22/3. Trumpers will publicly demonstrate their stupidity a few times, but we regrettably probably won't see them wiped out in an attempted boogaloo. I'll keep daydreaming about it until Jan 20th passes uneventfully though.

The Chinese interest in Africa is one reason I'm predicting that, but there's also a lot of unrest lately - Zimbabwe back into inflation, Sudan, Uganda, the Tigray situation. That unrest can easily become a pretext for US intervention.

If Covid could think, there would be rumors about a vaccine now. Many Covids would remark that their economy has never been better, they finally broke out of the pangolin and have gone global. They'd downplay the fear. As vaccination spread, many would simply refuse to mutate. The head Covid would deny that the vaccine even exists, and then when pressed to admit so would downplay the threat. Towards the end of 2021, most Covids will realize the vaccination is a threat but at least half of them will stubbornly refuse to mutate and won't bother to infect at GOP rallies and churches as the mutants advised. Mutants! What do they know? They can't tell us what to do. We're going to make Covid great again.
So. I think 2021 will be better... for humans.

Now that it's after Jan 6th, I think the start of 2021 is far worse than 2020 or any of the last four years of Trump ever was.
Mobs of violent rioters invading the capitol building. Murdering a capitol police officer. Stealing, damaging and desecrating. Online mobs making violent threats against the government and specific officials.
And why?
Because they don't like the outcome of a democratically held election!
I thought that Democracy was that the people voted, and then that was the outcome. They seemed to like how it worked four years ago. Plenty of people were disappointed with the outcome four years ago, but did not go trying to overthrow the government in a murderous rampage.
It is about time that major social media platforms realized the damage they are allowing to happen by their inaction and begin taking some action to police their content.
I eagerly await following the litigation of Dominion Voting Systems vs Sidney Powell [courtlistener.com] for $1.3 Billion. Hopefully the successful outcome of this litigation is then used as evidence in other litigation by Dominion against other so-called "news" outlets that brazenly repeated these baseless lies. This partially addresses all of the false claims without a shred of evidence that the election was stolen. Even Republicans said this was the most secure election in history. It certainly was the most scrutinized. Republican judges, including some appointed by Trump, and Republican legislators and other officials have maintained that no major irregularities have occurred in this election. Every election has some minor irregularities, and it is good for those to come to light to help future elections.
If these fascists don't like the outcome of Democracy, they they should go back to where they came from and leave our country alone.
It was not the intent of our founding fathers for traitors to overthrow the government because they didn't like the outcome of democracy. They gave us the power of the ballot to vote. If you don't win, then maybe your actual message or candidate is the real crux of your problem. Voting is the mechanism they gave us to control our government.

Better, and not only on the Covid front.
Covid is serious, no doubt, but both society and politicians made a mess of things. We all could have dealt with things better. In 2021, if nothing else, we have gained some experience. Plus, we hope, vaccines.
The shutdowns have accelerated a lot of long-term trends, in particular, moving our lives ever more online. Lots of jobs were lost, but lots of other jobs were created. This has caused a lot of upheaval that should start settling out in 2021.
And on a personal front: We built a house in 2020. The process was made a lot more difficult and expensive by a neighbor couple that kept filing complaints. Baseless and narcissistic complaints, sometimes approaching extortion - dealing with them was emotionally draining. They will undoubtedly continue in 2021, but the house is finished and we're living in it, so we can just quietly pay our lawyer to deal with them. They say the best revenge is living well, and that's what we intend to do in 2021.

When it comes to "action" the people willing to go weird are always there, but apparently their numbers are still tiny.
We've had big talk (like talk radio talk) for 30 years now, electing Trump was the biggest thing to come of it, and after 4 years of big talk in power now we've had "big action." If they all feel this strongly, I suggest we give them the state of North Dakota and let them have their way with it, I wouldn't mind granting D.C. and/or Puerto Rico statehood in exchange.

I've heard threats to storm all 50 state capitols. I expect the actual number of state capitols with any significant "storming" action to be less than 10, and the most significant "storms" to involve less than 5000 hooligans. I also expect that the state capitols will defend themselves much more vigorously than the D.C. police did for the first 3 hours. Two or three "machine gun nests" firing rubber bullets would have completely repelled the hooligans in D.C. and I'm sure every governor in the nation has better than that at their disposal from the National Guard.
If, by preamble, you mean we're going to hear butt-hurt conspiracy theory whining from ~50 million Americans for the next 2-3 years, yeah - I'm afraid that's a very real possibility.

The world DID not end in 2020. At this point, the world still has a 50/50 chance to end in 2021.
I expect for us down under it'll be worse. We bend over backwards happily to our American ally and now we're getting bent forcibly by the big bully in our greater region (in Asia). So all in all, we'll be fucked twice over as I don't expect Biden to continue picking that fight to keep that particular bully distracted enough - I'd expect his focus to be back to the middle east.
