So we all know that HUD has declared that you can't evict anyone for the foreseeable future on account of the whole coronaids thing, yeah? Given that, here's the pitch: The Odd Couple 2. Trump invokes that to stay in the White House and calls in film crews to the residential bits, which he can do as a resident. Be honest with yourself, you'd watch it.

ICFI/Socialist Equality Party: Justice Department proposes internal investigation to cover up state involvement in January 6 coup attempt [wsws.org]

The response of the Democratic and Republican parties to last Wednesday’s attempted fascist coup in Washington D.C. demonstrates that although the January 6 attempt failed at seizing power, the entire political establishment is now lurching further to the right. While the Republican Party defends Trump’s actions and integrates the extreme right, the Democrats trail after, appealing for “unity.”

By threatening physical violence in the run-up to the January 20 inauguration, the far-right has succeeded in intimidating state legislatures in several states. On Thursday, the Oregon state legislature delayed its 2021 legislative session due to threats from far-right militias....

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Washington Governor Jay Inslee, both Democrats, revealed Thursday that pro-Trump demonstrators stormed their residences on January 6. Walz said the demonstrators forced the evacuation of his children.

Walz added that he had not been briefed by any Trump administration officials about the FBI memo or any potential unrest....

According to Politico chief political correspondent Tim Alberta, similar efforts at intimidation also influenced the House impeachment vote. “I know for a fact several members want to impeach but fear casting that vote could get them or their families murdered,” he wrote....

The most right-wing members of the incoming Congress are now emerging as stars of the Republican Party. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a fascist QAnon supporter representing rural Georgia, announced Thursday that she would introduce articles of impeachment against President-elect Joe Biden on January 21, the day after his inauguration.

Despite the fact that Democrats will control both houses of Congress and the executive branch, the Biden administration and Democratic leadership are already announcing their desire to work with their “Republican colleagues.”

ICFI/Socialist Equality Party: What would have happened if Trump’s fascist mob had seized hostages? [wsws.org]

Had the tactical objectives of the operation been achieved, the political outcome would have been not only the delay of the constitutionally mandated certification of the Electoral College balloting. Having murdered congressmen and congresswomen, and taken hostages, the fascist leaders would then have demanded that the outcome of the balloting in states Trump falsely claimed to have won—such as Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania—be overturned. The demands of the hostage-takers would have received overwhelming support from the Republican Party, not to mention Trump himself. Inspired by the power exercised by the fascist leaders in Washington DC, there would have been, in all likelihood, similar operations carried out in various state capitals all across the United States.

As the hostage drama played out, with the official date of the inauguration approaching and countless lives at stake, Biden and the Democratic Party would have come under tremendous pressure to accede to at least some of the hostage-takers’ demands in the interest of stopping a bloodbath and reopening the government.

The scenario described above did not unfold, because the fascist insurrection failed to achieve its tactical objectives. The leaders lost control of their mob, which, once it had penetrated the Capitol building, wasted precious time taking selfies and looting. The congressmen escaped before they could be either murdered or taken hostage.

But regardless of the outcome, the event itself was an attempted coup d’état. To deny this obvious fact is an evasion and distortion of reality, which serves to cover up the immense political dangers that persist, and will grow more intense, in the months ahead.

Help! Help! I'm being deplatformed! See the violence inherent in the system!

International Communist Tendency: Storming of the Capitol: The Working Class Has its Own Battles to Fight [libcom.org]

The picture we’re getting from the US is shocking and serious.... Only two things matter. The first is that, even knowing that there’s no possibility of invalidating the election, Trump has fully mobilised the worst of the American reactionary world which has always seen him as the strong man.... In addition to the uncompromising "hardcore" loyalists amongst the 74 million votes he got, some parts of the state also responded to Trump's "subversive" appeal. These included sections of the police, like those who went to great lengths under his administration to kill black workers who still "haunt" white America; parts of the NSA, the CIA and the FBI. Add to that groups such as QAnon, the KKK and neo-Nazis, the white supremacists who have mobilised to save true American "democracy" from corruption, paedophilia, the integration of migrants, and the "communism" of Democrats by acting, even in para-military fashion, with Trump’s backing....

The second factor is that, in the midst of so much collapse (general economic crisis, the political crisis of the state, businesses and families, which the pandemic has only exacerbated)..., the proletariat is absent, unfortunately not only in the US.... Today the American masses, including some immigrants, have been duped by false electoral promises by both the right and left of the capitalist class who promise that if they get into power they will give us anything and everything....

To put an end to this we need a revival of the class struggle everywhere....

These are the necessary conditions for a social revolution to come about. But everything would be useless if there were no party with an alternative tactic and strategy to capitalism, a party capable of being the political weapon of the class as a whole.... The objective is not to change how capitalism is managed, but to get rid of capital itself, ending its exploitative relationship with the work force, its devastating economic and environmental crises and its imperialist wars. Either socialism or barbarism!

He's lashing out at everyone and everything he thinks wronged him, and trying his hardest to crapflood #soylent with disinformation and alt-right propaganda.

This site's admins are spineless. The most they'll do is refuse to publish the outright lies he keeps submitting, but no one's interested in smacking him down for it. This is why I'm keeping an eye on him and waiting for him to make an actual terrorist threat so it can be reported, and if it takes SN down entirely I will not shed a single tear.

TMB has viewpoints some people disagree with. That's fine. I agree with most of what he says, but I don't act like a douche when I disagree with his opinion.

Grow a pair, you special snowflakes.

Now, to be on-topic, it's a funny concept using the law to not be evicted from the White House. There are so many ways you could spin that.

    1. Biden always trying to sneak in.

    2. Biden and Trump living together.

TMB is okay with censorship when it suits his purposes. That's the bottom line.

I've emailed SN twice about the lameness filter censoring political comments. Here's a thread containing the text of the comments that was censored [soylentnews.org], split across two comments to avoid tripping the lameness filter. I've emailed SN twice, once over two months ago, the other time in late December. I just checked and the issue still hasn't been fixed.

The bottom line is that willfully ignoring a false positive when TMB is more than capable of fixing it, really is censorship.

I tried posting the censored text tonight. Here's what happened:

Filter error: We're sorry, the douchebaggery quotient of your comment exceeds the site maximum. Please be less of a douche.

I'm sorry, the douchebaggery quotient of the SN staff exceeds the maximum tolerance. I subscribed twice to SN in the past 12 months. Please be less of a douche if you ever want me to subscribe again. Otherwise, I'll be happy to give my money to a site where the admins don't act like right wing entitled snowflake jackasses.

It is very cute that you think you could judge the level of your own education! Your posts here, especially on the "stolen votes", suggests your education is lacking, and you are prone to believing things that are not remotely verified by evidence. You are are a Giuliani follower, Buzzie? That reflects badly on your "education".

I have had many students like you, throughout the millennia, my dear Buzztard, who all knew more than their professors. But in academia, the proof is in the peer review. The test of a Doctor, a Teacher, is when we hand the podium over to you, and if you cannot handle the questions of your peers, or even of the undergraduates in attendance, then your ignorance is revealed. And you will have to fall back on the "liberal bias" of higher education to explain your failure. But it is not liberal bias, it is only a bias against right-wing bullshit, and this is why you never managed to actually graduate from an institution of higher learning, not even a community college, It is the communal recognition of knowledge that we scholars assemble for. You place yourself outside that, and while that does not mean you are an ignoramous like Runaway, it does strongly suggest the possibility. Man up, Buzzard! Trolling is not knowledge. Your mistake, and not unusual for one without proper education, is mistaking the "consensus" part of "scientific consensus" for the pertinent bit. Apparently I'm such a "malicious, insulting dickwad" that I donated money to SN multiple times last year in the form of gift subscriptions. Apparently I'm a "flaming asshole" because I didn't particularly take kindly to being called a douche by your lameness filter message.

Let's post the actual text of the supposedly awful email:

                            To whom it may concern,

I attempted to post the following comment to Azuma Hazuki's journal:

                            [Text of blocked comment]

I received the following message when I attempted to post the comment: "Filter error: We're sorry, the douchebaggery quotient of your comment exceeds the site maximum. Please be less of a douche."

It is incredibly disappointing to try to write a thoughtful comment calling for all the votes to be counted, something that shouldn't be controversial, only to have it blocked by the lameness filter. The lameness filter message is also highly unprofessional. You are free to run the SoylentNews as you wish, but I do not much care for the lameness filter or having this comment blocked. If this comment qualifies as "douchebaggery" then I don't think I'll be contributing to the site or donating again.

I wish all of you the very best. Good luck.

                            Sincerely,

                            [Name removed]

Yeah, I was frustrated that I typed out a civil comment, only to be called a douche by a lameness filter you implemented. Did I express my frustration? Absolutely. Still, what I said was far less uncivil or rude than either of your two messages I quoted above.

Also, here's the second email I sent.

                            Dear admins,

I attempted to post the following text (blockquoted and in italics):

                            [Text of blocked comment]

I attempted to post that election night and proceeded to email the SN admins when it was blocked by the lameness filter. As I said, you may have changed the filter because I seem to be able to post that now. But I don't see what part of that comment should be blocked.

And I received the following lameness filter error: "Filter error: We're sorry, the douchebaggery quotient of your comment exceeds the site maximum. Please be less of a douche."

I don't think that text should be blocked, so I'm reporting the issue. TMB says I'd have to be a douchebag to trigger that particular filter. I don't see what about that comment qualifies as being a douchebag.

                            Thank you,

                            [Name removed]

The bottom line that you've directed nasty insults toward others, but you vastly overreacted when far less is directed toward you. Yes, I called the lameness filter message "highly unprofessional" but I did so because I was called a douche for attempting to post a very calm and civil comment. Yes, I said I might not contribute again because I didn't particularly like being called a douche when I thought it was highly unwarranted.

If you're offended by my email, I'm sorry. Yes, I probably should have wrote a calmer email, but it's hardly as bad as anything you've written here. For that matter, I'm sorry for my comment earlier in this thread, which quite was far worse than anything I wrote in either email. Yeah, I shouldn't have posted it. I'm sorry for posting it. I wish I hadn't.

As for subscribing again, I'm under no obligation to give this site money. I donate as a gesture of appreciation. Frankly speaking, it's a lot easier for me to bring myself to make such a gesture when there isn't a middle finger being waved in my face, figuratively speaking. I do believe this site is worth supporting, but there are many other causes worth supporting as well. Let's just say I hope I'll feel the desire to purchase more gift subscriptions. We'll see.

The lameness filter catching my comment was a bug. The message was not. You wrote it intentionally. It could have as easily have been "Lameness filter encountered. Post aborted." That's the default message.

It doesn't matter that I wasn't the intended target. It's irrelevant. I was on the receiving end of your message for posting a comment that most certainly wasn't spam. Like I said, I apologize for the snark in my original message and for comments I posted that crossed the line and insulted you.

I sincerely hope that nobody treats you the way you have been treating others. Instead, I wish you the very best.

I didn't see this comment before replying. I'd like to provide some facts.

My original email was sent the morning November 4. The only comment I posted about it at the time was this one [soylentnews.org]. I didn't hear anything about it but was curious if the bug had been fixed. It wasn't until weeks later that I said anything more about it. In fact, here's the next time I commented about it [soylentnews.org], not until December 25.

Was the November 4 email snarky? Sure. I apologized for that. It's hardly as vile as your words would suggest. My second comment wasn't for weeks after that.

I didn't demand an immediate response. I waited six weeks. If you say you didn't get the November 4 email, I choose in good faith to believe you. But if emails to SN addresses aren't getting through, it might be something to address.

Because it seems like there may be a misunderstanding involved, I'm willing assume good faith, bury the hatchet, and move on here if you are. Your call.

Are you sure it's fixed? Just now, I tried previewing the same text I emailed you about, and I received the same lameness filter message. I believe you that it fixed it then and there. However, something happened since then and the text is tripping the filter again. Because it's tripped the lameness filter again, I'd assumed that my report hadn't been addressed. I'd be happy to email the text to you again if it would be helpful in tracking down the issue. Let me know if I should send you an email.

As I said, this seems like a misunderstanding. And I do apologize for being snarky.

Yeah, I got an email about it earlier. I was trying to remember why we don't send them to those who make the subscription then I remembered we didn't do it on purpose. We don't require anyone be logged in to make a gift subscription (or even that logged in folks didn't use thisisnotarealemailaddress@foo.bar as their email address) and the email field on the payment processors isn't required to be valid for folks who value their privacy. Guess we could look into putting a checkbox saying you want a receipt and a receipt to field for them that want it.

For future reference though, if the payment went through and you got a message with a transaction id, all should be good. If it isn't we get alerted by the payment processor that something's wonky and check into it as soon as we have the chance.

“Democrats would benefit from additional ex-felon participation,” said the authoritative study [sagepub.com] in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

Thank you. It gives some evidence, though I'm not impressed that the study is behind a paywall. Can't tell if that "7 in 10" statement is taken out of context or not.

This at least answers the second assertion that Buzzy made, but not the first ("Left wing extremists kill more than that every year in Chicago alone").

"Left wing extremist" implies that Chicago murders are politically motivated, which doesn't pass the sniff test.

Correction: the first statement was made by Runaway, not Buzzy. Apologies!

I wouldn't argue that the murders in Chicago are politically motivated.

Assuming that the convicted criminals and otherwise violent criminals are inclined to vote democrat. Also assuming, that they make a significant enough portion of the populace that's getting Democrats voted into office. That doesn't reflect well on the Democrat party in general and makes you seriously question their motives. One could hand wave that all away, but it's at least interesting to notice. Yet, I'm reminded of this quote I saw at some point. (Not that people murdering other people is funny, but the fact that a large majority of convicted felons support Democrat candidates.)

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not “Eureka!” (I found it!) but “That’s funny …”

Well, one reason could be that the GOP tends to want to disenfranchise ex-felons who have served their time. Also bear in mind that not all felons are murderers.

Sure, why not. I think it'd be funnier if he just played Oscar Madison though. If you go with standard sitcom tropes and slapstick, you know instead of malicious partisan shitwadery masquerading as humor, you'll get a bigger audience and make people happy instead of angry.

They don't seem anything alike to me. Uzzard is a flippant sociopath with no ability to feel anything other than the shallowest possible connections to other humans, whereas Runaway is what the TF2 Sniper is referring to when he says "y'know who has a lo' o' 'feelings?' Blokes whut bludgeon their woives t'death with a golf trophy;" not a sociopath in the sense that his mirror neurons appear to work, but a Fox News jihadi who became the kind of monster due to right-wing propaganda his generation feared mine would become due to Mortal Kombat.

Uzzard, notably, is too weak-willed and lazy (up to this point...) to do anything more than bitch and moan and post inflammatory shit that stays on just this line of the Brandenburg v. Ohio decision. Runaway has come perilously close to breaching it, outright admitted none of his firearms are registered, and one day very soon is going to post an outright terroristic threat which we'll all have the duty to report.

They're not the same person, though they're arriving at the same kind of evil by two different routes. Uzzard also broke cover a bit earlier and revealed he's every bit as insane as Runaway, just lazier.
