Arthur T Knackerbracket has processed the following story:

Periodical cicadas emerge from underground in the spring of their 13th or 17th year. Fifteen US states are about to see a whole lot of them.

[...] Periodical cicadas, as they're known, spend almost their whole lives a foot or two underground, living on sap from tree roots. Then, in the spring of their 13th or 17th year, mature cicada nymphs emerge for a short adult stage, synchronously and in huge numbers. Really huge numbers.

"They may amass ... in parks, woods, neighborhoods and can seemingly be everywhere," Michigan State University entomologist Gary Parsons explained in an MSU question and answer session on the phenomenon last year. "When they are this abundant, they fly, land and crawl everywhere, including occasionally landing on humans."

[...] This spring, it'll be time for members of one of the largest broods of 17-year cicadas, known as Brood X, to burrow out from their subterranean hideouts and show off their black bodies and bold red eyes. Fifteen states will hear the romantic serenades of males in trees, trying to attract females: Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, as well as in Washington, DC.

The return of the cicadas typically starts around mid-May and runs through late June and is, needless to say, a wild spectacle.

[...] The bugs are harmless, Parsons stresses, and typically don't come indoors, though they do gather on outside walls.

But just think, while you are listening to those billions of cicadas, they are dwarfed by the number of stars in the universe. Billions of billions, in the Milky Way, and billions of galaxies of at least the size of our Galaxy? Boggles the cicadas, does it not?

Of course, seriously, that is a lot of bugs. Worse than the Microsoft latest release.

      FALSE!

The trillions of trillions of unknown Microsoft bugs dwarfs that of the billions of billions of known bugs in Windows 10, leaving the amount of cicadas bugs just a small fraction several hundred decimal points to the left. Nothing just one more fucking update can't fix, I'm sure.

There's no call for that level of hyperbole. That many cicadas would mass more than the entire planet.

      See this... [wikipedia.org]

Although they are sometimes called "locusts", [wikipedia.org] this is a misnomer, as cicadas [wikipedia.org] belong to the taxonomic order Hemiptera [wikipedia.org] (true bugs), suborder Auchenorrhyncha, [wikipedia.org] while locusts are grasshoppers belonging to the order Orthoptera. [wikipedia.org][2] [wikipedia.org]

I think it is more interesting that these periodic cicadas chose the prime numbers 13 and 17 as the number of years they remain dormant.

OMG what happens every time the 13th and 17th year happens to coincide!?!?

It's just that [cicadas are] heavy on mercury.

Since Mercury's 3.7 m/s2 gravity is lower than Earth's 9.8 m/s2, it would therefore make the cicadas even heavier on Earth than they are on Mercury.

      Am I right?

These are the Cicadas of Doom who emerge from their underground lairs every 17 years. If they find that the earth is warmer, they return underground for another 17 years to give mankind another generation to wipe itself out. If they find the temperature hasn't risen then they kill and consume all mankind. So do your part to protect mankind and keep consuming fossil fuels.

better stock up on sleepwear earplugs and/or soundproofing for your bedroom.

Cicadas are LOUD, at least 85-90db in general, much louder if they are close, and the don't stop at night.
