The fact that the human menstrual cycle occurs on a time scale that is close to that of the lunar cycle has led to a lot conjectures about the relationship. A new paper in Science Advances says this relationship can exist.

ABSTRACT:

Many species synchronize reproductive behavior with a particular phase of the lunar cycle to increase reproductive success. In humans, a lunar influence on reproductive behavior remains controversial, although the human menstrual cycle has a period close to that of the lunar cycle. Here, we analyzed long-term menstrual recordings of individual women with distinct methods for biological rhythm analysis. We show that women’s menstrual cycles with a period longer than 27 days were intermittently synchronous with the Moon’s luminance and/or gravimetric cycles. With age and upon exposure to artificial nocturnal light, menstrual cycles shortened and lost this synchrony. We hypothesize that in ancient times, human eproductive behavior was synchronous with the Moon but that our modern lifestyles have changed eproductive physiology and behavior.

The moon should have a big impact on many things, as all life on earth has evolved with it.

So the old joke is, the DoD had some need for sheep at some point in the 50s, I forget half of it, but they commissioned a $3million research project to determine whether or not sheep dogs really protect sheep. Back in the day when $3m would actually buy a few lunches.

So the researcher hired an assistant, and the assistant went to Montana, and found a sheepherder.

Who told him yes, sheep dogs really do protect sheep. You mouth breeding moron, what did you think they did?

Yes, there is a connection between the moon and the cycles felt particularly by the female. We've known about that for at least 30k years. But now we get to forget everything our ancestors knew, and wait for some perky college grad with an iq about 80 to tell us what we already knew.

    Progress!

Mine isn't directly synched to the Moon as it's usually a little shorter and sometimes a little longer (and then there was that one memorable 8 months or so without any at all due to stress...). But for what this is worth, I do feel at my absolute best on a full moon and for about 4 days before to 2 days after.

In the wild, so to speak, full moons are very important. They permit night-life. In that context, there's an obvious reproductive advantage to ovulating about the same time as the night-life is possible.

Nowadays, not so much, of course. The clock still exists in our DNA, but it no longer gets a chance to synchronize properly, in an environment with electric lights and night-life seven days a week.

The moon synchronized itself to women eons ago. The Man in the Moon is just like all of us earth men.
