Kodi 19 Released With Python 3 Transition Complete, AV1 Software Decode

Kodi 19.0 "Matrix" is now available for this popular open-source, cross-platform [home theater PC] solution.

Kodi 19.0 is represented by nearly five thousand commits since Kodi 18 and represents some big changes like finishing off the migration from Python 2 to Python 3. Kodi 19.0 also has many audio/video playback related improvements, AV1 software decoding is now supported, integer scaling is supported for those playing game emulators within Kodi, various theme/skin improvements, metadata scraper improvements, and new security improvements.

Kodi 19.0 "Matrix" - Release

Because of many changes across supported platforms, the LibreELEC team is planning an initial release of LibreELEC 10.0 (based on Kodi 19) with stable support for x86, beta support for Rockchip/Allwinner ARM, and alpha support for the Raspberry Pi 4. Raspberry Pi 2/3 support will be added in LibreELEC 10.2, and support for Raspberry Pi 0/1 will be dropped.

...I don't like^^^I mean, why can Kodi play UHD vids on my media box with no problems that on VLC become slideshows?

Maybe they're too busy creating some awful mess of a new UI to work on the kinds of performance issues you experience.

I've used VLC for a long time, simply to work around various OS' silly restrictions, but on an Nvidia Shield, I usually use Kodi. It has better access to my stored media, nicer visualizations, and usable plug-in system.

I'll have to wait a while to deploy 19 until the LibreELEC folks get a stable version for my Pi 4 (I may set up a test bed for the alpha, if I can help them out), but that means that the Python 3 issues should have been reduced by the x86 deployment.

To be fair to VLC, their Code of Conduct requires them to hire exclusively from the LGBTQUX community.

Beats me, I view 1080p content at best.

So I guess a tabbed interface is verboten.

Why would this be? Just because it is single threaded?

There are work-arounds that allow multiple threads to be active at the same time (they just have to be spun up as separate processes, kicking that handling out to the OS). The only thing that you can't do is have multiple threads simultaneously access the same data in memory, which doesn't really seem like something you'd need that much in a media platform.

Not sure if they went through the work I described above just so your ears can be assaulted by the sound of multiple videos playing at once, but they could have.

Whoosh. I guess you missed the Python TAB vs SPACES wars. They’re ongoing, so you’re not too late. And you don’t need an informed opinion, just an opinion.

Just be aware the artwork situation is 'interesting'.

ArtworkBeef is dead. So getting 'extrafanart' into KODI now means using external tools for now. Hope you used the 'flat name KODI v18' style. So extrafanart went from a fairly automated process to a very manual one. You will need some sort of external tool for now. This is for both for music and videos.

Also a large number of plugins have not been ported to python 3.8 yet. As well as a decent number of the skins are not there yet.

Also to add if you use a SMB share from windows you will need to get your password into the share. I found you need to put the thing in then either reboot to clear the SMB creds windows will conveniently hold onto for you or use one of the NET USER commands.
