Death Valley reached 130 F, is it the world record?

How the highly unusual Death Valley temperatures just got more complicated:

California's Death Valley is known to be a hot place, but it hit 130 degrees Fahrenheit (54.4 degrees Celsius) Friday for only the fifth time in recorded history -- that's only five days out of more than 40,000 days on record.

Interestingly, it could happen again Sunday, and perhaps even Monday as well.

The record for the number of consecutive days at 125 degrees or higher is 10, set in 1913 (June 28-July 5). This year, Death Valley hit 126 on July 7 and will likely continue that stretch of days with 125-plus temperatures through Tuesday. This would be eight straight days, which would be the second-longest streak in recorded history (tying eight days in 2013).

[...] But as hot at 130 may be, it is not the hottest temperature ever for Death Valley -- which is 134 degrees, set in 1913. That is also considered the official world record, but it is a bit of a controversial one.

But accurate measurements are difficult. There used to be another world record.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is the governing body that determines formal weather records across the globe, as well as weather nomenclatures (such as naming tropical systems).

Prior to 2013, the highest recorded temperature in the world was actually 136.4 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius), set in 1923 in Al Azizia, Libya. However, the WMO later determined the Libya measurement was faulty and officially de-certified it as the official all-time highest global temperature, giving that designation instead to the Death Valley temperature on July 10, 1913.

Wuhan is home to a BSL-4 lab doing "gain of function" research on coronaviruses.

And yet, when a novel coronavirus (surprisingly effective at making humans sick AND transmitting between hosts) appears in Wuhan, the notion that there is any connection with the MAXIMUM HAZARD LEVEL BIORESEARCH FACILITY WHERE GAIN OF FUNCTION RESEARCH IS BEING DONE ON CORONAVIRUSES LOCATED IN THE SAME CITY is somehow a laughable "conspiracy theory", not worthy of consideration, because Orange Man Bad said it.

Never mind the fact that such facilities in China have previously leaked SARS on more than one occasion... https://news.yahoo.com/npr-spotty-report-wuhan-labs-223633873.html [yahoo.com]

... and that's why you should stop stressing about AGW. Is it just coincidence that increasing global temperatures correlate to increasing manufacture of thermometers in China? Based on historical precedent, there's a good chance that current temperature readings will be officially de-certified one day.

If only scientists had some model and some data that could explain why we're seeing record high temperatures.

I wish there were some explanation for this that would enlighten us to why this is happening.

It is too bad that it is a total mystery why we're seeing these record high temperatures.

You mock, but you clearly are not taking into consideration trumpeocentric science. Just like how coronovirus deaths looked like they were increasing, but this was really because we were simply testing more people, the atmosphere looks like it is getting warmer because we are taking more and more temperature readings.

As one who earned a passing grade in thermodynamics at university, I can assure you that temperature cannot possibly get more complicated.

As one who earned a paycheck as an experimental physicist, I can also assure you that every measured quantity is but an approximation, and is almost certainly wrong - much like the summaries that introduce SN news items.

If "the highest recorded temperature in the world was actually 136.4 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius)", how is it that I can boil water on my stove?

Fain do I offer you a clue.

        The headline suggests:

        ...Temperatures Just Got More Complicated

Now, this phrase is nonsense. A better phrase might have been "temperatures are in dispute".

Rather than correct the headline, though, I thought it would be fun - in a geeky fashion - to ridicule it cleverly, demonstrating why it is nonsensical. Hence in my first sentence:

...temperature cannot possibly get more complicated.

which has the delightfully dual meanings of (1) temperature is already too complicated a notion for the average human to grok, and (2) temperature is already well defined and hence added complication is neither necessary nor helpful. To clue folks into this lampoon, though, I needed a reference to thermodynamics (of which temperature is the zeroth law) to point to the evidence that temperature is both complicated enough and rather difficult for most to grasp. If you would dispute these assertions, I would first challenge you to read and understand every bit of science and math on this page [wikipedia.org].

In the second sentence, I was pointing out that all measured temperatures are open to dispute, and such disputes are largely a waste of time.

In the third, I was again lampooning the summary's omission of the word "ambient". Are there no volcanoes on earth hotter than 57 C?

Now, as I craft a posting here, often music pops into my mind, and today it was that tune by Bananarama. How apt that it describes the strange scientific voices in my head that prevent me from ignoring the scientific mistakes posted on SN. How appropriate it seems when thermodynamics is something most folks will never understand. All of this in the middle of a cruelly torrid summer.

Forgive me if I have confused anybody. I had hoped to be moderated "funny".

If you really are a trained experimental physicist, you would have measured the temperature of the water boiling on your stove. Why do you assume it is higher than 136.4 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius) if you haven't measured it? Perhaps your water boils only at 134.6 degrees Fahrenheit (57 degrees Celsius).

Death Valley is hot, and you don't want to walk around casually. But it is one of the most beautiful national parks in the United States. The Golden Canyon hike is particularly worthwhile; it will also look eerily familiar [travelandleisure.com] to Star Wars fans, as will several other sites in the park.
