Say hi to Microsoft's own Linux: CBL-Mariner

Microsoft has its own Linux distribution and, yes, you can download, install and run it. In fact, you may want to do just that.

Ok, so it's not named MS-Linux or Lindows, but Microsoft now has its very own, honest-to-goodness general-purpose Linux distribution: Common Base Linux, (CBL)-Mariner. And, just like any Linux distro, you can download it and run it yourself. Amazing isn't it? Why the next thing you know Microsoft will let you run Windows applications on Linux! Oh, wait it has!

[...] Microsoft didn't make a big fuss about releasing CBL-Mariner. It quietly released the code on GitHub and anyone can use it. Indeed, Juan Manuel Rey, a Microsoft Senior Program Manager for Azure VMware, recently published a guide on how to build an ISO CBL-Mariner image. Before this, if you were a Linux expert, with a spot of work you could run it, but now, thanks to Rey, anyone with a bit of Linux skill can do it.

CBL-Mariner is not a Linux desktop. Like Azure Sphere, Microsoft's first specialized Linux distro, which is used for securing edge computing services, it's a server-side Linux.

This Microsoft-branded Linux is an internal Linux distribution. It's meant for Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and edge products and services. Its main job is to provide a consistent Linux platform for these devices and services. Just like Fedora is to Red Hat, it keeps Microsoft on Linux's cutting edge.

Is this the year of the Linux desktop?

Now the real question is, why did this old news just pop up on soylent just now? Because there's a couple of people here who go to hacker news, and steal articles from a few days ago.

if you want to have a conversation about it, without the minorite blue-green spacelaser ethanol jew conspiracy guy, the autistic guy, and the bitter incel, our real discussion was here - no trolls allowed.

Did something happen to hacker news?

I left it when it was becoming little more than a corporate astroturfing ground, with like 80% of the front page articles just politicrap from the NYTimes and other similar clickbait factories, gradually descending into becoming Reddit-lite. The front page now looks a lot like it did about 10 years ago when it was still an interesting site. Wow, just perusing some of the links like this [lab6.com]. Seriously, was there a crackdown or something?

      >little more than a corporate astroturfing
what happened is it got worse, and more of an echo chamber. then you got people talking for an hour about being nice to each other when someone posts a snarky comment, which gets them shadowbanned after a couple of times.

so it got much worse. but what you consider corp astroturfing, is devs and managers for big companies posting about important projects that we're interested in talking about. one of these "astroturfing" posts was the start of airbnb. others were stripe, instacart, doordash, and reddit.

I'm guessing you go on github and are amazed by the amount of project listings, which you view as ads for projects?

Reddit lite? Strange, on reddit it's a bunch of edgy teens telling experts they're wrong after a google search. On hn, when this linux topic was posted here, I talked to a microsoft guy about it. When I had an AWS issue and couldn't get support to respond, I asked there and talked to a director at amazon who fixed my issue in about 2 hours.

hn is where important people who actually do things in live hang out. if you think that's reddit, good thing you left. you don't belong there.

      ..and stay out.

Your comment about hollywood painting the wrong picture I completely, 100% agree with. Here's the issue: christian and gop propaganda sources say "no slaves, because they were paid laborers." It's not an either or, so that's a strawman, and you'll find many sites using that strawman. "They weren't slaves because they were paid."

They were indeed paid laborers. Who were slaves, had a master, and could not get themselves free and just leave. Instead of providing food and housing for the slaves, the Egyptian masters paid them a small salary so they could take of their own basic needs. But they weren't free to leave. If this is a concept you don't understand, you should look it up.

"A stopped clock is right twice a day". The (quite abundant) evidence suggests the pyramids were constructed by free men, though to be fair in the Torah building of the pyramids wasn't specifically mentioned either... only in subsequent writings. Also, the modern archeological consensus is that the Israelites were natives of Canaan and were never in Egypt. From the evidence it appears the "slave revolt" was actually an overthrow of an urban elite by a rural population in Canaan, which became combined in myth as both the escape from (Egyptian) slavery and the overthrow of "the Canaanites" ie. the city dwelling elite. One can easily imagine the real history might have been politically inconvenient from the perspective of the new urban elites.

"hese drawings on the walls of a temple show the Hebrews, the people of Moses, long before he was commanded by God to deliver them from slavery. The drawings make it quite clear who was in charge. Here, a big, strong Egyptian demonstrates his power over grovelling slaves."

This depends on what you define as slaves. They were slaves, but they were paid. Right now, it is commonly agreed that Qatar uses slave labor, yet they do pay them. The people who built the pyramids were paid, but they were slaves - as in not free to leave. "Many slaves who worked for temple estates lived under punitive conditions"

"Masters of Ancient Egypt were under obligations when owning slaves." There was a legal process where they could apply to leave their master, however no cases were found that this ever took place. So, paid slave labor. This is called selling yourself into bonded slave labor. "Although slaves were not “free” or rightfully independent, slaves in the New Kingdom were able to leave their master if they had a “justifiable grievance”. Historians have read documents about situations where this could be a possibility but it is still uncertain if independence from slavery was attainable."

And what is the composition of those slaves? The modern consensus is that Jews were not in Egypt in any real number, let alone as slaves. [google.com]Where there Semitic slaves? Yes, but most semites back then weren't Jews and semites still represented a minority of slaves. I notice one of your sources is relying on Exodus, which scholars do not believe to be accurate, if it even happened at all. "There is no good evidence that up to 3 million people left Egypt at once nor of Moses" - cool, good thing no one was arguing that. They were arguing that jews were the slaves, not owned the slaves.

The title is literally: Learn about the Hebrews, whom Moses led out of slavery in Egypt. Or how about: But who were these people in thrall to the Egyptians? The Bible describes them as nomads who ended up wandering onto Egyptian territory, where they were made the slaves of the Egyptian state. Or Moses was one of these workers. He, and a chance event, changed history. Or maybe the entire closing paragraph of The Bible describes how Moses sees one of his comrades being beaten by an Egyptian guard. In a burst of fury, Moses kills the guard, later burying the body in the sandy soil. Moses has to flee for his life. Putting 400 kilometers between himself and the scene of his crime, he ends up in the Sinai mountains. He lived here for years, taking a wife. Ten years later, the Bible tells us, he returns. He has been commanded to confront the Pharaoh and release his people from their bondage.
